There is a rumor running around that several EM residencies will be expanding next year due to new funding from Bush and a new emphasis on EM.

Anybody know of any programs that are expanding for certain? I only know of one: Stonybrook. Any others?

Temple - also going from 8 to 10

On the flip side:
Drexel/Hahnemann - from 17 to 12

Actually, Drexel is only dropping to 14.

I can't remember which, but I recall that about 1/3 of the programs I interviewed at in the south east were talking about modest increases in class size. Usually it was because other services were pulling their interns from the ED due to work hour restrictions. I think Duke was one of the places talking about going bigger (6-8 IIRC).

If remember correctly, expansion is not based soley on funding but also must meet ROC requirements. There has to be a certain number of patients/resident etc.

Off-service residents leaving the ED is a bogus excuse to increase the size of the program. Anybody who has had to supervise off-service interns in the ED knows that they slow down, rather than speed up, the patient flow through the department.

I don't think it was so much that they needed the bodies, but that there was now room for a few more residents.

Oops...thanks for catching that jlw2004! 🙂

I'm sure that there are more residencies out there that are expanding.
