If anyone could gove some input ofn the following EM programs:

1. New York Presbyterian Program
2. Tampa General Program
3. UMiami/Jackson
4. Orlando Regional

And also, is a 3 or 4 year better for EM?

Since I still have my Kevlar, I'll jump in front of you and take the round that about 3 or 4 people are likely to fire at you in the coming minutes. Please buddy, read the sticky threads, especially the FAQ's thread. It addresses at least 50% of what you want to know. Plus, go to cordem.org and visit the Kalamazoo, Michigan EM program's website under the heading "1-3 programs". Dr. Overton has an incredible manuscript that will answer 40% more of your questions. The last 10% regarding the actual programs you have mentioned can be done through a search here...upper right. Good luck buddy.

Which is strange given the number of patients that role through the Gun and Knife Club at Jackson every day. Also strange is that all UMiami med students have to do a rotation in EM. What, we can train med students but not residents? For crying out load! Even UF now has an EM residency. And its in the middle of Gainesville.

Hey now don't be a Gator Hater! The truth is the RRC visited Miami and decided it would be a dangerous precedent for them to approve a residency in EM outside of the the US.

.....hmmm, what's that you say? Miami is the US? Are you sure? Oh ok, never mind then, I am not sure what the problem is.

Even if you are hating on my hometown..

BTW you know what they say about UF football right?

"The arrogance of Notre Dame with the tradition of Wake Forest."

Not my saying but I heard it and honestly I hate their football team!! GO CANES!!!

Sometimes my friend you will find that the truth hurts.
.....and apparently you respond in kind with some painful truth of your own. Nice quote!

drkp nicely done... its good to have a little fun..Growing up in Miami and being "white" is really quite an experience. I cant tell you how many times I got in an elevator and someone just blared out spanish.. Since I have a tan and dark hair everyone assumes I am hispanic (when in miami). Heck who am I kidding my wife thought I was hispanic when she first met me!! Seeing my last name (which is "ethnic") lets people know..

I really grew up as a minority, my HS was 44% Black, 44% hispanic 12% white. We had NO Orientals and 1 Southeast Asian.. My HS had over 3300 students.. Best part was there were only 3 white players on my HS football team 🙂...

I then went to college and those percentages changed a lot...and I was no longer a minority..It was a great experience growing up there though..

Lastly.. UF Basketball is having a solid yr! Congrats to you guys..

I'm no Gator Hater. I'm a UF alumn! I just don't think that Gainesville can provide the best expose for a wide variety of patients. Come on, how many rednecks and drunk frat boys can you stand to see in one week?

Spurrier is one of my favorite coaches!!! The guy has stones like I dont know what! He is real smart with his coaching but he is too lazy to recruit studs..

We had cr@p for a team...half were in jail, half were just not good...somehow that man changed it into a winning team (well, we will forget that last game...).
he did in 1 year what Holtz couldn't do in 5. he proves that you don't need talant to compete...but it does help. and yes, recruiting is sucking pretty bad at the moment.
anyway, on to next season-the motto of all gamecock fans

He can do more with little. The top QB next yr Claussen has them in his top 4 (along with ND, USC and Ten) he will go to Tenn IMO esp since they hired his older brother. They are doing ok, the picked up one of the best DL in the state of FL today.

They approved my program in North Mexico.

Southeast Asians are basically Indians and such, whereas orientals tend to come from china, Japan, Korea etc. I hope this helps 😉

Im still waiting for Miami to start accepting my application!

Or for you more visual learners like myself....
Oriental=Harold, Southeast Asian =Kumar

Ectopic I went to an HBCU (historically black college/univ) and was one of about 5 percent crackers and only about 2 percent of us lived on campus so I know the feeling of being an overwhelming minority. It was a blast though and wouldn't change a thing.
I also did a semester in Miami and it was cool until one evening I went into a McDonald's and the girl at the register didn't speak english. That was the tipping point for me as far as Miami is concerned. Cuban diner fine, laundromat....sure, but freaking MickeDee's NO. That's where I drew my line.

That depends... am I at a frat party or work????????? :barf:
Seriously though, when did you rotate through Shands? I would imagine that would have a big influence on your impression.

This same thing happens to me in parts of chicago, McD's and other restaurants.. Funniest part of 3rd yr.. Me and my tern ("Harold" - see above) roll into the Cook County ED to admit a pt to our medicine service. Said Pt was African American, my tern's english wasnt so good, I LITERALLY translated to whole conversation, both sides of it.. Freakin Hilarious!!! Best part was my tern would yell at people when they didnt understand them.. it made the whole thing kinda funny but kinda sad at the same time.

There are a lot of great things about that city!! I hope to roll down there for a week or so in Feb or March! Hang with the fam alittle and see my friends before I become a tern!

I didn't rotate through Shands. I used to be a CNA there. I remember working in the ED late one night during Rush week. I saw a 20-year-old male walk in with an entourage of people. He was holding his arm and bleeding profusely. All I could think at the moment was, "This has to be a stupid frat guy who got hurt during Rush." Sure enough, twenty minutes later I hear the attending mutter, "Stupid frat boys and their rush."

The guy was unconscious from the pain killers. Meanwhile, his bitch---I mean girlfriend---was demanding of everyone that we wake him up so that they could leave. Finally, another CNA got totally annoyed and put smelling salts under his nose, yanked him out of bed, tossed him into a wheel chair and yelled at his girlfriend to get out.

Nice story. If I were working that night I would have had a serious talk with that CNA about his job responsibilities v. my job responsibilities. Anyway my original point is that Shands is relatively new to being a level one trauma and that has also upped there intake of tertiary referrals so it's likely now to be more pathology then you remember from your glory days as a CNA. I am sure rush week is still a pain there though.
P.S. After a quick reread of the above I realized you might think I am talking down to CNA's. I'm not. I was one for 8 years during which time I worked as and ED tech for several years. If I ever did what you described the CNA above as doing, without being told to by and EM physician, I would have been fired so fast I would have beat the patient to the parking lot.

Corpsman,

We know you are military and respect that. However, I think you are a little too intense sometimes. Doing a search on this site most of the time is useless. The information is outdated and are from posts circa 1999. I don't understand what the purpose of the forum is if you can't ask questions and get informative up to date info. You guys waste so much time telling people to do a search when you can just answer the Q!

B-

He was actually doing the OP a favor.. There would have been a slew of Fatty McFattyPants and a ton of stuff about the Inn N' Out residency.
