I didnt know whether to post this in here or in obgyn but I'd love to hear what you guys think are the pros/cons of obgyn vs. em?!?

i am getting to a crucial time where I have to decide between the two because I love them both and my fourth year is starting soon.

I want to see if you guys point out things that I haven't thought of.

thanks in advance!

In my best Simon Cowell tone...I'm not being rude, but if you are even asking that question then OBGyn is probably right for you.

Seriously though, for me aside from the disgusting part about dealing with dirty and infected coonany all day long...OBGyn is so incredibly boring and confined within such a narrow knowledge base that I wouldn't feel like a real doctor. I'm sure I could go on forever about why I think it sucks but if it's something you like (???) all the best.

Of all my 3rd year rotations (none of which included EM), I enjoyed OB/GYN the most and I did think about going for it for a little while.

OB/GYN pros: there's a variety of ways to go off of it: you can do primary care and do annuals all day, do can do surgery all day like a gyn onc, you can do MFM (which imho is just plain baddass). I disagree that OB/GYN is the same stuff over and over (at least to any larger degree than other fields of medicine). I think OB/GYN and ENT are the two surgical specialties that allow you to nicely balance surgery and office-based care.

OB/GYN cons: work hours, liability.

EM pros: variety happens daily, and because its a new field "there's a variety of ways to go off of it:" you can do bread and butter primary care and procedures galore in a county setting, or you can do EM peds and spend all day taking care of sick kids, you can do fellowships like tox or US. I think EM is one of the best specialties that allow you to nicely balance all areas of medicine, and then let you find your niche in an new specialty. A couple of other big EM pro: no call and no rounding.

EM cons: works hours (i.e. nights, weekends), liability

After doing my 2 EM months, I've never looked back. Good luck as you decide for yourself what field best fits what your career goals and desires.

You can earn more in OB/GYN (strangely), but you end up paying it back in malpractice.
In EM, you get your fair share of pelvics. I miss the days of GYN clinic actually, because at least those girls bothered to clean their parts before coming in. You won't be birthing many babies in EM though (and I find that a good thing).
Just do a month of each as a third year when you have more responsibilities and see which one you like best.

That's so funny that you are between those 2 specialties! I thought I was the only one! When I started my 3rd year, my first rotation was OBGyn and I LOVED it! I don't know if it was because it set the standard, but I had a really good time. Nothing could even compare to it until I did my EM month. Then I was stuck. I loved continuity of care, but I loved the acuity and diversity of EM. What it boiled down to for me was specifically identifying what I liked about each specialty. For OBGyn, it turned out that I liked the pelvic/speculum exams and ultrasounds, mildly liked vaginal deliveries, and was completely ambivalent toward the surgeries and c-sections. I also knew if I went into OB, I would specialize in either urogyn or MFM, which would have been a total of 7 (or 8) years in training. When I realized that I could do my favorite things (pelvics and ultrasounds) in the ED AND see a wide variety of patient complaints (which you lack in OB), then the decision became clear. Yes, I would have to give up direct continuity of care, but I found that the frequent fliers provided me with all the continuity I could stand! Oh, and I was shaving 3-4 years off of my total training (depending on whether I matched in a 3 or 4 year EM program) which equals doctor's pay sooner! Of note, I remember hearing that if you could love OBGyn as a rotation, then you should do it, because not many love it. PLEASE don't listen to that advice! Just because you love something, I would definitely keep looking because you may find that you love something else MORE (as was the case for me). So basically, with all of that said, I say sit down and really look at what you like about each specialty. You will find at least one more personal pro for one of them and that is what you will choose. Good luck!

-P.S. I'm officially DONE interviewing for EM!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!! And I certified my ROL this morning!!! Match Day, here I come!!!! (fuzzy navel anyone?)

I also loved my obgyn rotation as a third year. At my end-of-rotation evaluation with the clerkship director, I told her I was interested in going into ob. This was her (somewhat abridged) response:

"Emmd06, I like you. You are going to get honors. We would love to have you. That being said, only go into obgyn if you cannot imagine yourself doing anything else. You said you are also interested in emergency medicine. Do that."

I took her advice.

Look for a posting by kbrown on her, and PM her asking about the two. I think she'll be able to give you some insight on the EM vs OB/GYN decision.
