So i was wondering if anyone has ever heard of someone using their first EM1 year (i'm not referring to a prelim year in a 4 yr EM residency, but the actual first EM1 year) as a prelim year for instance radiology. Since it's not techinically a year of medicine or surgery, i'm wondering if it has ever flown w/ residency programs. Any info?

It would probably fly (good clinical rotations), but the only way I can see this happening is matching in EM and wanting to switch to Rads after less than a year...the tough part would be matching directly into the upcoming R1 year. BUT, to answer your original question, no, I personally know of no one that has done this.

Any PGY-1 in a ACGME (or whatever the DO board is) accredited residency will do for radiology. Other specialties like neuro (requires 6 mo IM) might have different rules.

I know of
- ex ENT
- ex GS
- ex peds
- ex OB/Gyn

going into rads.

Only things I haven't heard about somebody doing as PGY-1 are psych and path. There is no requirement from the ABR about it being only surgery or medicine.
