Hi all,
I am a competitive candidate and have gotten a number of interviews from good programs. However, I was rejected from one of my top-choice residency programs (an admittedly very competitive program).

Should I email the PD asking for him to reconsider my app? Or is that just silly.

Normally I would say that sounds desperate, pathetic and is not likely to work...and thats all true. But, the more I think about it...what's the down side to trying? Are you going to get even more rejected?
I doubt it will work but what the hell?
Do it, let us know what happens.

it worked for me. but I had done an away rotation at the place and had an attending go to bat for me as well. if it's worded nicely, it can't hurt.

Hope you do well on the interview, but it sounds like a courtesy extended to you/the attending. Unless you really impress them in the interview (which is not likely, given that you spent time there and they didn't give you an interview initially), they will drop you. It would probably be more productive to focus on other top-notch programs.

I would get one of your letter writers, your dean, or a prof that you know that graduated from the program to call and advocate for you. That's what they usually recommend at our school. I'm not sure how much power writing your own e-mail will have. Good luck!

No!

If they rejected you, they rejected you and even if you grovel/beg and somehow they decide to grant you an interview, it's probably a pity invite.

Just like a pity date, no one wants to be part of that!

Close the book, pick yourself up, and move on. Rejections are like getting kicked in the gonads, they sting for a little bit, but it gets better with time. Don't make it worse by handing them your gonads on a silver platter!

What if its more like a pity lay? Then the proper course becomes a little more fuzzy. Me personally if its a prime piece of meat (read: great program) I'll take it anyway I can get it and Im not hurting for options either...its just human nature.

If they give you and interview I agree its probably a long shot. You'll need to kick ass in the interview. However, if you're not spending a ton of money to get there and you've got the time what the hell.

Hey! This just happen to me! I was invited to interview at several competitive programs, and rejected at one of my top choices (which was little less competitive than some of the others that I had recieved invitations for). To make matters worse, I traveled 300 miles to do an away rotation at that hospital, and happened to be there when I recieve the letter! DIRTY, hunh!

Anyways, I finally managed to get the courage to march up to the residency office to ask them the PC "what were my weaknesses, and how may I improve them" question. The residency coordinator reviewed my application, and realized that it was probably a mistake! She thinks that they checked the wrong box on ERAS, and noted that it has been known to happen at their program (apparently, not everyone is comfortable with the program). I haven't recieve any news from the program director, but I am hoping that this is what happen!

Also, I recieved a rejection letter from one of the programs that I had already scheduled at, which was later followed by another letter of apology stating that they clicked the wrong box!

Anyway, go check it out!!!! It may be a mistake....GOOD LUCK!!!!

kinda scary to see that this kind of thing happens with respect to something so important. with your story i think that's justification to almost always ask for a "re-check" if you get a pre-interview rejection that doesn't make a ton of sense. the down-side is minimal compared with the up-side. thanks for relaying your experience with us.

same thing happened to me. i got a rejection over email from a program. the next day the program coordinator called me to invite me to an interview and i was soooo confused. i told them they had given me a rejection letter and then the PC determined that it was a "computer" mistake....and that i was infact invited for an interview!
