Hi everyone,

I'm an MS3 currently in my IM rotation but im interested in plastics. I was advised by upperclassmen to email a specific plastics attending that I want to work with before I start surgery so that I can get my foot in the door and hopefully start research since I transitioned to plastics late while others have known since MS1. The attending I have in mind is very receptive to students interested in plastics but I have never wrote a cold email. Does anyone have experience writing an email to set up a meeting? If so, can anyone provide a good sample email? Thank you.

why not schedule to see them in office and ask them then?

Hello Dr. _______,

My name is rottweiler. Though I sound like I want to destroy people's faces, I'd like to do the opposite. I'm interested in plastic surgery and would love to get involved in some research. I was wondering if I could meet with you to discuss potential options. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your flesh eating friend,

Rottweiler

You could definitely add more but those are the basics

If there is an easy way to find out who there secretary is, you can email or call that person and ask to set up a meeting with this attending to discuss research opportunities/mentorship. Otherwise, you can send an email to this attending, state who you are, what year, that you are interested in plastics and would like to meet to discuss research opportunities. Thanks them in advance for their consideration.

Shouldn't be too long. Keep it formal but express appreciation.

Go to his office (or the department's office) and talk to the secretary.

You should be able to write an email at this point in your career without a template. Jokes aside, Ophthoseidon's email is pretty much all you need.
