I am really interested in a program at which there is an alumni from my medical school as a R2 - I was wondering if it is a good idea contacting them for advice as to getting into the program? I didn't know him personally so I don't want to seem pushy or annoying. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

If they aren't still there when you interview, it won't mean much as far as you getting a slot there. However, it won't be pushy, and they can help you decide if you want to go there.

I will be interviewing next year so they will be a third year resident at that point. I was just wondering if I should email them and speak to them in regards to what the program actually looks for etc. Thanks for the advice - I will be emailing him soon!

We were actually encouraged to do this in medical school. Everybody's different, but I don't think most people would have any problem with a short email asking questions about a program. I would keep it concise and just let them know your situation. If you don't hear back, I might send one more in a week. Multiple unsolicited emails, however, are "pushy and annoying."

Like many things in our small world, it's a connection. An email to feel this person out is a no-lose proposition. You have at least something/someone in common, so it can't hurt to send an email to see if they can provide some insight. As long as your expectations aren't too high, this can't hurt and I would encourage you to do it.

I don't think you should phrase your email as "Can you help me get into this program?" I received several emails this season from graduates of my medical school asking for my opinion on my program and whether I'd be willing to have a cup of coffee after their interview day. I always sat down with them if my schedule permitted.
