is this cool? it looks like cornell and columbia sent out their 1st round of interview requests this week. i did not receive any sort of reject emails from them...is it kosher of me to email the PD and ask about the status of my application?

i only have 2/4 LORs in and no dean's letter...

I can tell you from experience that this is something that may not always be appreciated, but it at least makes them check on your file. I'd say yes.
 
I think it's too early to start contacting them. Wait until your Dean's Letter is received by the program and if, after a week or so, you still don't hear from them, then I would email the contact person listed on FREIDA, not the PD. I emailed a few places last year with no success, but I agree it doesn't hurt. Just wait another month.
