Emailing programs that haven't invited you yet

Hmm, sounds like my school. Did you or your wife finally get to see that info? I'm planning on asking for it again, because if programs are getting to see that info and basing their judgments on it, shouldn't I see it as well? Unlike LORs, I don't remember waiving my right to see my class ranking, even if it isn't numerical and just gives a rough idea of where I stand.

OP, I'm really sorry about hijacking your thread, but I hope this info is helpful to everyone 😳

No, my understanding is that they will never see it. Agreed that it is silly, but they seem intent on sticking with their "we don't rank" fairy tale.

I am surprised to see people talking about emailing a program they didn't hear from until about now. I, for instance, applied to EM, which many people say is known for sending the bulk of invites after the MSPE on Nov 1. That being said, I received about half of my interview offers before Nov 1 and half after. With only about 10 offers, I still have some programs I really would like to interview at.

I am hoping someone (maybe aPD?) can tell me when most programs have mailed the majority of the offers out. I assumed it would be by this week, but I got a few invites this week (last was Thursday) so I don't want to email a program about application status if they are still sending out invites. I have heard that persistence and showing interest like this can show well for an interested application, I am just struggling with when one should assume they are not going to get an invite offer.

Also, do programs tend to continuously send out invites through the season as people cancel?

Sorry to bump this and take away from histogram discussion, but did anyone have any thoughts on this? I know many people I have been talking with have this very question. Thanks a lot.

For program invitation schedules, it is difficult to say. After the MSPE, many programs will be finalizing and by mid-November, I would estimate that most would be live and active.

I would favor for cancellations that they would try to send out invites on a rolling basis. They probably have a waitlist. At the terminal end of the season, I would expect a greater attrition rate as people are tired of interviewing.

As I stated in my previous post, the benefit/harm analysis would favor an e-mail as a beneficial way to show interest. All in all, most programs have probably made decisions, so an e-mail may not make much a difference... but if you get an invite because of the e-mail and showing interest... it will make all the difference.

For the IM match, I believe the initial interview invites will be out by mid-November (still waiting on Harvard, UPenn, NYC programs, and some others). After that, interviews may represent cancellation interviews. I have already canceled 4 interviews before the MSPE, so that freed up some space already.

For the EM match, it is more competitive, and people may hold onto interviews more closely as your ROL may need to be longer to match (I don't have the stats in front of me to see).

Bottom line: Probably not going to hurt e-mailing a program at this point.

Thanks FT. Luckily, most of the interview offers I got were in the geographic area I want to move to, while the programs I have not heard from are the ones that were in my secondary locale. However, there are a few programs I am really stoked about that I am still waiting to hear from. I will be emailing the regardless, but it's just a question as to when. In EM, it seems that most programs wait until after the MSPE to send out the bulk, which seems to be corroborated by the EM Interview thread. In fact, there is one program (not even considered super competitive) that it seems that nobody has heard from.

I am thinking about giving it until the end of this week before emailing. Any EM-ers out there have any input (interview offer trends) on this? There is not such a thread as this in the specialty category. Thanks!

I kind of got the impression a larger portion of invites came before the dean's letter. This is definitely true for my application.

I hadn't heard from one of my top programs yet, so I sent the PC an email on Tuesday night asking if I could check on the status of my application and stating why I like their program so much. Wednesday afternoon I checked ERAS and they had just downloaded my most recent USMLE transcript. And this morning I received an interview invite! 😀

i emailed the PD of one of the program and the PD read thro my app and emailed me back granting me an interview
