Would it be a bad idea to email the program directors of the programs you really want to do residency esp. if you want to have family there and are almost certain to want to settle in or around that area? I did not include in my PS that I wanted to settle in so and so area because of family. Should I add that and re submit?

Add and resubmit your PS.

Also, speak with PD at your home institution is OK. Speaking to the PD at your number 1 program b/c of location all aforemntioned reasons I think is OK. Calling every PD, I wouldn't do that. Also talk to the PC as well and let them know.

This is your career, where you want to be is very important.

Be professional and sincere in your communication with the PD. The PC I think tho is your better bet.

I would ask an adviser at your school. The main thing you want programs to think is that you want to come there because the program is magnificent (otherwise, don't waste their time and your time interviewing there)... family is a secondary reason. If I received an e-mail from an applicant with the line that I want to come here because my family lives there, then I would not be too excited about an applicant. That is a secondary reason, not a primary reason you should want to go to a program. It also really depends on the program.

I would also wait until the MSPE comes out. While this survey is limited by response rated as only 47 % of IM programs responded (http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty.pdf), it does show most programs are waiting until the MSPE is released to send out interviews. You can check out our interview thread to see if it looks like many invites have been sent out at the program you are interested in.

All in all --> would talk to an adviser!

What's the difference between PC and PD?
