So I got this email (below) from CWRU. I didn't apply there because my stats are low, but was considering it since it is a good school and I wouldn't mind living in the area.

We can add schools to our verified AMCAS, correct? I'm assuming they send this same email to everyone with >30 MCAT so how seriously should I take it? I'm a URM with good ECs, a 3.0 BCPM, 3.04 AO, and a 33Q MCAT.

Recently, we received your name from the Medical Minority Applicant Registry (MED-MAR) that you added your name to when you sat for the MCAT examination. Based on your MCAT performance, we feel you may be a competitive applicant to our School but, ultimately, a full application review would have to be performed to determine eligibility for an interview.
As you embark upon your journey into medicine we hope that you will consider our School for your medical education. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is among the top institutions nationally in both research and patient care, and boasts four large and nationally recognized hospital partners, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, MetroHealth Medical Center, and the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center. In addition, our innovative curricula and three MD program tracks, not to mention a large number of dual degree programs, allow our students to not only explore the many different paths in medicine but to also become skilled clinicians, researchers, and teachers. Please visit the links below to learn more about our School.
We look forward to seeing your application!

You are a URM. You have a 33 MCAT.

You are going to well this cycle. Apply to CWRU. They don't just send that email to everyone who had above 30.

Oh and, good luck!

I got email from CWRU too, but not from columbia and dartmouth. I'm asian and have 35Q MCAT.

Being able to do rotations at Cleveland Clinic would be amazing. The secondary is only $85 too.. I guess I'll just add it to my AMCAS.

When did you received these emails? I received mine in winter of 2011 after I took my MCAT. They sounded like they were for last cycle when I got them.

For asians to receive emails you probably need like a 40. jk, but not really

yea. I am ashamed of getting only 35 on MCAT given that I am an asian bio ph.d. I usually got 14 on BS (sometimes 13) on my practice test, but I only got 12 on the real one.

Well, you do have a PhD, so that should help you out a lot compared to other asians. I wouldn't worry too much, because your MCAT score should get you in some where.

Also, these letters are to strictly recruit URMs, mainly Blacks, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans based off of minimum MCAT scores.

I only got one email (from CWRU) and it came this morning.

Hope you're kidding.

So anyway, are these emails primarily sent to collect more secondary fees? Or should I be taking it seriously?

I think it's a little of both. They also probably expect a lot of URMs to have the fee waiver. I think they just want to make sure they get enough URM applicants to fill the spots at their school. They haven't seen your GPA yet, so how much they like you may change based off that.

Colleges, not just med schools, are notorious for sending those letters out. Unless you get one personally sent, written, and signed by the dean or some other important faculty member, you should take their invitation with a grain of salt. They just want to increase application numbers, they aren't actually saying you stand a high likelihood of getting in.

They also don't know your GPA yet either (unless you can enter that info on MCAT and AAMC sends it out, I don't know, I haven't taken MCAT yet), so keep in mind that they're probably assuming you have the kind of GPA that a guy with a 33 usually has.

I'm an Asian with a 37 and I got a few letters and emails but they don't mean anything.

Please go away. 🙁

I got the email too. It's good marketing because I wouldn't have considered CWU either, but now I might... If I get a few extra bucks this paycheck, I might add them to my list.

Thanks for the input. AMCAS doesn't send out until the 29th right? I'll sleep on it for a few weeks I guess.

sigh.. must be nice to be a URM.

Yea, it's pretty awesome. We have an advantage to get into medical school, but are disadvantaged in almost every other part of our life. Pretty sweet gig.

I know I honestly didn't mean that to sound as ignorant and spiteful as it did.

You and me both. I'd still apply to Case, though. I love it here.

looks like you're graduating this year, congrats
your mailbox is full
also i thought you were asian but apparently you're caucasian

I'm actually on a research year, so I'll be graduating in 2014.

I've just emptied my mailbox a bit, sorry!

As to the Caucasian bit, that's news to me. I had no idea 50% rounded up...

i basically just extrapolated from your mdapps. i thought you were asian based on your previous posts but your mdapps said caucasian so i was confused. my mistake.

Whatever, you're from CANADA.

Don't take these emails too seriously. It's a recruitment tactic based on the stats and demographic data collected via amcas, etc. They send out tons of them

This. They're just recruitment crap, many applicants of every color, stat, and background get them. Just ignore them and only apply to the schools you originally planned on applying to. You get no special preference for receiving this letter.

Thanks. I've been thinking about it a lot since reading the email and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to add them to my AMCAS. It would be a real reach for me based on my stats and I'm already pretty strapped for cash as it is. An additional $120 for a reach school isn't really in my budget.
