what does "bump" mean?

'bump' is internet terminology for "bumping" a thread back up to the top of the forum, as forum posts are ordered from most recent post to oldest post

Does it actually stand for that, or did the phrase come after the acronym?

Like SOS didn't originally stand for anything but so many people now associate it with 'save our ship' or 'save our souls'. So I thought 'bump' just meant 'oh I'm bumping this thread back to the top of the list'.
