Embryology textbook

I'm starting medical school in a month. Anyone have any suggestions for a good embryology textbook asides from BRS and HY? I heard Moore and Larsen are the preferred embryo texts for medical students.

I think all of them are crap, but Moore's Developing Human is probably the best of the lot. I stuck with High Yield Embryology and it worked out just fine.

I'd start medical school first, and see first hand how much embryo is emphasized... I very highly doubt you will need anything more than BRS, which I thought was just enough. In fact, don't buy any books until you start school or you at least talk to some 2nd years.

The best source in my class was our instructor's notes, coupled with some reading from HYE and Moore & Persuad.

I checked the books out from the med library as needed.

OP, just FYI, wait til school starts to buy any books. The ones I ended up buying were ones that I knew I would end up using through M2 and for Step 1 study (thinking about the Taus plan). The rest I got from the library as needed.

Lange's Embryology (this was really good and concise; it also comes with a CD that's really helpful...especially when learning a subject like Embryology!)

Moore's Before We Were Born is also good. But it's a bit detailed so if you have the time, why not.

I studied Embryo last year ; I took the highest grades in the lectures I studied from Moore. On the other hand, I studied some of the lectures from the prof.'s slides but I screwed them in the exams ....

So .. Believe me, if you have enough time to study Moore, JUST GO FOR IT!! It's so comprehensive, and illustrated.. It's THE BEST... No Question about IT!!

You will be a reliable Embryologist if you studied from this book 😛

Although it's fun, it needs an effort.. so Good Luck!

Um... not to be a jerk but isn't this advice HIGHLY subjective to the school you go to? I studied straight from the slides and from HYE and aced all the embryo on my tests and did reasonably well on the NBME. In fact I'd say studying from Moore for the NBME is counterproductive as it's a very dense book. If you've got a photographic memory though, go for it.

I personally found Larsen to be a extremely well written book. That being said, I've only read maybe 10% of the book and that puts me above average in my class for reading. It's actually kind of disconcerting how little is covered other than general embryo and a day or two of embryo per organ system.

True, I totally depends on the school. I recommended the book since he's asking about the books.

I studied from Moore the chapters that were not well-explained in lectures. It takes time, but once the informations are in your mind they will stuck there!

But ironically it's semi-high yield boards material, more so even than anatomy i'd say.
