Anybody else on this group on Facebook? I just found out about it not too long ago and man... I'm kind of shocked at some of the stuff people post on there. I mean, there is zero anonymity and people post cases, many times including pictures of pathology or of patients themselves. It seems like one gigantic HIPPA or medicolegal nightmare waiting to happen.

I lurk on there.

Some of the discussions are interesting, and often times get pretty heated. I find there to be high quality memes.

I personally would never actually post for the reasons you mentioned.

I find it to be the worst of the worst. A ton of misinformed people who rant on things like EMS, pediatrics, and airways, who decide to argue about it even in the face of evidence using the most bizarre anecdotes.
I lurk, but it currently sits in "unfollowed" status. If people tag me or I see something in another part of FB that directs me there I might go read something. See also "d10 vs d50" that was posted in the last couple of days.

This. I left the group awhile ago. Got too toxic/conplainy/political. People unbelievable misinformed about lots of stuff including medicine, personal finance, the world, etc. Judgement severely lacking as well as there are clear HIPAA violations and people kvetching about their jobs in the open. Tons of non physician penetration. I'm actually waiting for the NY Times piece exposing this group.

Chu ly is an emergency medicine demi god.
If he even exists.

He's the Satoshi Nakamoto of EM.

We all have crazy and ridiculous stories about close saves we've made. Most of us don't tell everyone about them though.

He exists. I would say his legendary status is mostly condensed. Like the rest of us, most shifts he does nothing. He just happens to have worked for 20+ years so he has a lot of crazy stories. See also Olen Nettenburg.

I have a Facebook account but I rarely post and never about work. Social media has become such a cess pool that I try to avoid it, especially facebook where it's next to impossible to have even pseudo-anonymity. I post maybe once a year, usually a banal happy birthday post or the like, just to let people know I'm not dead. Sometimes I'll post about work here and I used to on Kevin MD and EP Monthly, but the cases are made HIPAA compliant and fictionalized enough that the risk is near zero. There are 18 factors you need to change (see A-K, here) or remove to be safe, and no, most of these people you're talking about ranting on Facebook about work and patients are not doing it the right way. It actually takes a fair amount of time and energy to do it right and safely. The right right way is to leave it at work and not post about work on Facebook, like a spaz, truth be told.

I don't understand the hate Chu Ly gets. Basically all his posts are really cool and sometimes even educational. I guess you could read bad intentions into the fact that he posts his interesting cases, but I have to think that if you are doing that, then you are the type of person read bad intentions into everything.

KK moody did a good job getting clowns to buy her a farm. Smart.. very smart. Too much ******ed BS on there.

SDN is way better than EM docs. In terms of being informed about CMG and just medicine stuff. I browse occasionally but for the most part it gives me insight on the world of ER. But the politics and general toxicity limits the enjoyment

The physician message boards are the only reason why I have Facebook most of my social media is instagram.

Yeah, it's way too political. Lots of people posting rashes and seem to spend way too many neurons trying to figure out non emergent pathology. I absolutely don't trust the lack of anonymity. Facebook would offer up an export of the group discussions in a heart beat. I think people are lulled by the fact that it's a "private" group. I much prefer SDN.

Yeah you will. But they won't all be "emergency" docs.
Of course, probably 5K of the membership is ABEM, and the rest are any number of things.

That explains the random rash posts and the ECGs that folks are posting ON SHIFT asking others to read for them. Super disconcerting. Treatment by crowdsourcing?

Every question on there that is prefaced by "Query to the HIVE...." has me rolling my eyes and groaning. It's usually followed up by something like... "so I've got this pt that showed up tonight in my urgent care with this rash on his penis...took a million pictures and am about to post all of them (pt said it was ok! I promise!)" "What on earth could it be?!?! I've done some reading and maybe....idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis?!?!"

Followed by a gazillion responses.

Also roll my eyes at BAFERD acronym used all the time there.

Hahahaha so true.

When I was a member, 90% of the time I was thinking "I have no idea what that rash is, but I do know that they should have been discharged an hour ago."

I never looked into the farm thing because I'm super broke anyways. Can anyone explain what the deal is with it?

If I remember correctly you would “donate” to have access to this Wellness Ranch. Members that donated more had certain privileges. Also it even had a resident amount to donate at one time.

The reason why I find it disgusting (and blocked her) was because as stated previously it’s a bunch of docs basically helping her to purchase a farm with NO chance for any ownership. If that has changed over the last 6 months then I apologize for my inaccurate comment.

Yeah that’s what I thought to she has the farm and it is advertised as physician “wellness” but it’s really her farm that she will charge people for.

No u can donate to help her pay for. Top 5 scam in em. The bigger ones have acronyms like 1. USACS 2 TH 3. EVHC 4. APP.

If she pushed harder could have broken the top 4.

Omg you can get access to camp but still have to pay for lodging. I have also seen her at conferences recommending study guide materials and other CME activities so she probably makes some $$$ on that as it is.

Why not just camp at different places and own your own lodging how is this “wellness” place unique for physicians?

Did the people that help raise the original capital really not get ownership? The website lists an LLC, so I would assume they are all partners in this business venture.

All the talk about "wellness" just seems like a selling gimmick, though.

In all fairness I personally posted a vasculitis related question when I was moonlighting on my 2nd ever shift as a early 3rd year resident in the middle of no where with almost no resources. Sometimes it's helpful to get perspectives on how others would manage something like that.

I dont have fartbook. My life is probably way better. My data is safer. That's for sure.

Bravo. I don't have a facebook, twitter, snaptwit, instapchap, instasnapgram, snapchat, snap-a-doddle-do, an all those other social media accounts. My life is safer. More sane. Holy moly thank the lord sweet jesus I don't dabble in that stuff

She owns all of it. Goofballs made her a little richer.

Was looking at the membership fees. You basically pay at least 750/year (over 1k) if you want access to anything that's not DIY camping and then on top of that, pay a fee for cabin reservations.

Sounds like a bogus time share.

I agree. The only exception used to be Twitter, which once upon a time was a great way to read/follow sports news because it limited your tweet to 155 characters (or some other seemingly arbitrary limit) so the pundits and beat writers had to get to the point and not bloviate for hours without actually saying anything.

Tweet: "SOURCES: A.McCutchten traded to NYY for bag of peanuts, draft picks. GL Andy."

ESPN: "We're going to spend the next 45 minutes discussing whether or not the Yankees are better with the new acquisition of Andrew McCutchen as an outfielder. First, lets talk to the other ethnically well-balanced cast members to see how much they know about this player. I heard that he absolutely hates Cracker Jack. Lets get to Tyrell, Katie, Fernando, and Old Reuben in just a minute. How is it possible that anyone DISlikes Cracker Jack? You have to consider the composition."

Once upon a time, I turned on ESPN and watched sports. Actual sports. Now, its nothing but talk shows who discss NFL/NBA and NCAAF/NCAAB only.

Wow. You're not kidding. From the website:

No Equity Rights. Member acknowledges and agrees that Member shall not have any equity rights or ownership interest in the GRWR Retreat or the Company. Without limiting the foregoing, Member acknowledges and agrees that Member shall not be entitled to vote or receive dividends or other distributions nor shall anything contained in this Agreement be construed to confer upon Member, as such, any of the rights of a stockholder, equityholder or member of the Company or any right to vote, give or withhold consent to any corporate action, receive notice of meetings, receive dividends, share in any profits or other distributions, enjoy subscription rights, or otherwise with respect to the Company.

I was looking a bit further into it, and it looks like 450 "founding members" put in $300, which amount to a 20% down payment for the property (sold for $675,000 in 2018 according to Zillow). If the founding members each pay $10 per month, that covers the monthly payments on a15-year mortgage with a few hundred each month left over. This doesn't include the fees from non-founding members (which are higher) or reservation fees to do anything other than camping--so it's safe to say that the insurance and property taxes are probably being fully taken care of by members.

Granted, there is still an incredible amount of logistical and manual labor work that must be done to get this ranch up and going, but this was a hell of a way raise free money for the business. In a few years it will be quite a nice passive-ish income stream.

I just don't see how this makes sense for a "member," though. You are paying at least $120 a year for the option of camping in a 75-acre property -- isn't it more cost-effective to do so at a national park which will have much better amenities and scenery?

Physician wellness is hurt by things like this I will give to charity but not sham “wellness investments”. Even when people ask for financial advice and link to white coat investor the posts maybe gets 5 likes.

Also a lot of spend now and don’t worry about debt posts ughh

Yes. And wellness isn't going to the same place every year to hear the group of people on the internet that make me angrier than anyone but antivaxxers. Although there are antivaxxers in EM Docs too.

I wouldn't contribute to this thing just on principle now, but I guess I can understand the appeal. You get to camp on a pretty piece of land whenever you want and meet like-minded individuals away from the proles (of course that's probably not how they think about it). And it beats the price of ACEP or whatever. Wish I had thought of this before Moody and had the social media chops to execute it!

Holy ****. Membership fees range from $$150 for residents all the way up to $10k with a monthly $20 fee?! Holy ****. Good for her, but man these people are marks. She got a freaken gorgeous ranch out of the deal. The place looks really nice.
