Hey guys, I am interested in a career in Emergency Medicine. Just wondering if there is any significant disadvantage with matching into a residency program with a DO compared to an MD. Sorry if this was posted in the wrong area/section (I'm new here lol 🙂 )

Just to be clear, no disrespect at all to any DO over the disadvantage remark. I have heard from several people that it is harder to match into residencies as a DO compared to a MD and wasn't sure if this would apply for emergency med/if this is true.

EM is a very friendly DO field. The third most-populous for DOs, behind FM and IM, in fact.

84% of DOs who applied to EM as their first-choice residency got it. Being a DO will hurt your competitiveness at specific programs.

Thanks! Just out of curiosity, what fields are DOs at a disadvantage? (if you happen to know lol) thanks again

As a generalization:

Competitive fields (surgical sub specialties, dermatology, interventional radiology etc.) and prestigious programs in less-competitive fields (like pediatrics at CHOP, family medicine at UCSF, or internal medicine at MGH).

Very DO friendly field. Like others have said above, it can shut out DOs in the higher tier residencies, but unless you want super inner-city academic or high-level research, you should be baller.

DO's really shine in Primary Care and EM (IM, FM, EM, OBGYN to a lesser extent).
Some other DO friendly fields if my memory serves:
-Path (one of the highest match rates IIRC)
-Radiology
-Neurology/Psych
-Anesthesiology
I also think PM&R has match rates of around 60% in the last match for which data is available

PM&R is an interesting one. The match rate wasn’t excellent (last I checked). However, in the residency program director survey, 100% stated they often interview and rank DO applicants. There are DOs on the residency rosters of many high profile institutions (like Stanford, Hopkins, and NYU).

In short, all of them. It just varies by how much. The more competitive the field or program the more at a disadvantage.

At my hospital I would say 1/2 of the docs I see in the ED are DO, including the DO that I shadowed. EM seems to be pretty DO friendly.

EM is quite DO friendly. Do well on boards and you can go to most programs that don't screen out DO's.

On that point, out of curiosity, what was the going avg Step score for DO's who matched EM?

Edit - since you are class of '24, doing well on boards means Step 2, unless they also make that P/F which will really put the dagger in DO's hearts more than it already is for your class.

EM is DO friendly. Sure, at the top places, it can be harder to match BUT if you put in the effort you can still match at top places. We had EM match at Hopkins and Columbia as DO
