Just curious to hear how competitive it is for DO grads and if their are a good number of practicing DO's in emergency medicine.

Thanks

It is generally wide open for allopathic residencies...but the truth remains that NO allopathic residency will match more than 1/3 of their PGY1's D.O. Some programs may limit their PGY1's D.O.'s to 1-3. But that never seems to be a problem...I had absolutely no problem getting interviews this year. Remember to always play your strengths as a DO.

Anyone know if it is possible to get a residency at a very high profile EM program (HCMC, Chicago, etc...) as a DO? Does the 'quality' of a residency program have an impact on job prospects?
Thanks....

I think it is everyone's intention to get into the best residency possible...regardless of MD or DO. I plan on matching at a great place, I am blessed with some great opportunities. I have some close friends that interviewed at some prestegious places for EM.
It is wide open.

Hey Drmoon,
I haven't heard from you in a while. Did you decide to apply to DO schools, or get accepted?? I hope so. Let us know.

How hard is it for DOs to get a residency in EM? anyone wants to share their experience??

Ed

lots of DO's in EM. there are DO residencies in EM, EM/FP, and EM/IM. DO's can also do MD EM residencies. several MD EM residencies now have DO directors or faculty, including the program at maricopa in AZ which is listed on most peoples' top ten lists.there is a specialty organization for DO's in EM, the acoep(american college of osteopathic emergency physicians). my current EM chief is a DO and one of the best EM docs I have ever worked with.I think it says something that there are 25 MD's in the group and 2 DO's and 1 of the DO's is chief-this is not based on seniority it is based on skill and experience.

If you want an Allopathic residency...yes you are a slight disadvantage (I wrote about this in the Osteopathic Section), as many residencies will have a "limit" to DO's in their programs...just the way it works. But regarless of MD or DO, if you bust your butt, get good grades, score well on boards, and have an outstanding audition rotation...you make yourself a potential "first round draft pick" on match day. So do your best and everything will fall into place.
You will find that DO's have a larger voice in EMRA and ACEP than ever before.

DocWag is right. If you are a good candidate, regardless of being a DO or an MD, you should be able to land a spot into an EM residency. (I have but 11 days until Match Day, we will see if my words ring true for myself).

Some residencies are more friendly to DOs than others, but as a general rule, DOs have entered the EM field relatively easily and some DOs are at the forefront of academia and national recognition in EM.

There seems to still be a bias against DOs in some of the more competitive California programs.
