Is an osteopathic school a good option for someone who is fairly certain they want to do EM? I'm trying to figure out how many DO and MD schools I would like to apply to, and if DO is a good route for me.

That is good to hear. I work in a Level 1 Trauma center and although we have a few DO residents, there are 0 DO attendings. I will be applying for sure to at least UNECOM this summer since I am from Connecticut. I hope a 3.2 gpa and 30-35 MCAT will get me in.

DO's are very prevalent in EM, and are found as attendings & residents at a vast majority of the major recognized ACGME (MD) residencies.

For what it's worth, there is a DO in the ER where I volunteer.

Same here.

keep in mind also that many DOs are trained in EM at DO hospitals and they also work as attendings in DO hospitals. Also, there are plenty of good EM residencys out there at osteopathic hospitals. The MD programs for EM tend to be DO friendly, but a DO hospital is still your best bet. but yeah, the bottomline is that there is plenty of oppurtunity for DOs in EM.

Thanks for the great info guys, especially about NYC because I was worried a lot of the DO's would be in the midwest.

I'm hoping to be a future EM DO myself. I would suggest that you consider applying to PCOM, NYCOM, and UMDNJSOM as well. I know that St Barnabas (Bronx, NY), which is in the PCOM network has a great AOA EM residency and NYCOM can help you find some really great spots in NYC too.

i know of a DO in SC that has been the chief of his ED dept. 2x now. very well respected by all under him, MDs, DOs, nurses, etc.

note: SC = South Carolina, not Southern California, South Chicago, or variations thereof...

I am a DO student & am highly interested in EM. The thing that I have always been told about EM as a DO is that you will have to work a little harder than the average MD student to get into a residency - that is if you want to go to an allopathic program.
I have worked in 4 different ERs (from small town to Level II Trauma center) and have worked with both MDs & DOs there. There will always be a greater number of MDs in this specialty due to the number of MD students that graduate each year vs. DO students.
Bottomline---Go wherever you get in. Work hard no matter where you go (DO or MD school) and you will succeed. There will always be people/programs that are less DO friendly than others. However, there are plenty of programs out there that are DO friendly. As a matter of fact, some are very open and excited to have DOs in their program.

Well, I can tell you that the ER that I work in has a slew of D.O.'s and they are very good ones. I was so surprised when I first started working there, and we also have a specific hospital that our residents all work out of which just mean that they have an allo and osteo EM residency program 👍

Go to Stratford. Practically the whole ER is DOs.

This is true for practically all ER's in Oklahoma as well.

True, but if you're looking for trauma exposure (I am) Kennedy isn't the greatest.
There are quite a few Peds ER DOs in Cooper Hospital (Camden, NJ) and the chief resident there as well as 1 or 2 others are DOs. UMDNJ students also rotate at Lady of Lords (inner city Camden). NYCOM has excellent rotations, specifically at St. Barnabus in teh Bronx, where you get a lot of trauma exposure. I'm looking at EM, which is one of the reasons I chose to apply to NYCOM.

PS - Chk out the EM forum 🙂
