Hi all,
My formal training is in pediatric emergency medicine (3 years peds residency + 3 years pediatric EM fellowship). I spend about 60-70% of my time working in the U.S., and I spend the remaining 30-40% of my time volunteering in a developing country, where I end up having to be a sort of "jack of all trades" in regards to the patients I see (i.e., I am not just seeing pediatric emergency patients). A lot of the work I do overseas involves maternal health (I work with other volunteers--mainly midwives--at a birthing center). I have learned a lot about emergency (medical) obstetrical care over the past couple years--I've read a lot and I've also learned from the midwives with whom I work, and from visiting OB/Gyns. The conditions I'm most comfortable managing & treating include hypertension, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia (we transport patients to other hospitals for c-sections), premature labor, stalled labor, post-partum hemorrhage, and chorioamnionitis. Because of my pediatric and EM training, I'm very comfortable with all aspects of newborn resuscitation. There are many topics I would love to learn more about, so I can better manage emergency situations as they arise. Specifically, I need more hands-on training in managing things like shoulder dystocia, compound presentations, and so on. Is anyone aware of a conference devoted to teaching emergency obstetrical care (ideally focused on people working in developing/3rd world countries) to non-OB providers? If the course offered training in OB ultrasound that would be even better (I am trained in emergency ultrasound, but not OB).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or input!

You might consider taking the ALSO course (Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics), which is geared more towards Family Medicine providers who practice OB. It's not quite geared for developing countries (part of the course involves reviewing how to read fetal heart tracings), and I don't believe they offer ultrasound, but it's a good place to start to review treatment of dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, forceps and vacuum deliveries, etc.

Hope this helps.

Smq123, thanks for the reply. I will definitely look into attending an ALSO conference.

If anyone else has any suggestions/thoughts, please keep them coming. I am definitely open to attending more than one conference on this topic.

Thanks again.
