Dear all Pre-medical or pre-osteopathic students,

I am currently in the works of drafting an AMSA resolution to cap the fees of secondary applications.

In order to present data at this years convention I need your help.

If you know or if you remember the following please reply to me on this thread.

Please tell me the name of the medical school, how much the secondary application fee was, and whether or not you actually had to fill out a secondary application. For instance

Boston University School of Medicine $100.00 No Secondary Application

I would greatly appreciate any and all response.

Thank you,

IzzyMD09😀

applied 😳. hey i am canadian...i dont know much better

I meant secondary as in addition applicant info not included in the AMCAS
or updates since AMCAS was completed.

Boston University has an secondary fee, and says it is optional for you to write a letter stating why BU SOM, but again that is not a secondary.

thanks for the comprehensive list though, it will be very helpful, can you define screeing for me though

thanks

screens are based on your AMCAS primary . if you are deemed worthy you are told to fill out a secondary and give them more money

screens are based on your AMCAS primary . if you are deemed worthy you are told to fill out a secondary and give them more money

Well thats the point of this little inquisition

Take Georgetown for example, their application fee is 130 dollars, originally the application fee was established as a fee for examining additional information not provided in the AMCAS due to time since AMCAS submission, updated grades, recent extra-curricular involvement yada yada

today however, more and more secondaries request the same information found in the AMCAS, and ask for essays that are similar to your personal statement already in the AMCAS

now just for fun lets say Georgetown recieves 5000 secondary applications per year, which from recent trends in applications sent per year to most medical schools is a gross undersestimate

however, that means Georgetown stands to profit $650,000.00 every year from sending out secondary applications.

Now this is all fine and good, but what if, hypothesis, there was a screen that was given after your secondary, what if secondaries are given to all people that send a primary to Georgetown...would you not think that is corrupt. It stands to demonstrate that a school like Georgetown is potentially sitting on a cash cow, and all they have to do is send out secondary applications to anyone who put Georgetown down on their AMCAS, pretty corrupt if it does indeed happen, and there is evidence to show that it does.

Take for instance the secondary applications sent out from schools to students with far below average GPA's and MCAT scores, that student is going to think he/she has a chance because they received a secondary in the mail, and oh boy they cant wait to send in their check for 130 dollars. Check arrives to Georgetown, they actually look at the secondary and see said person got a 25 on his/her MCAT and has a 3.3 GPA, big rejection ...no refund
end of story

you think about that

all of you

Izzy

nice vent there 😛 . All i gotta say is life is unfair. People will always find ways to profit. Smart students will know better...

the cap is not up to me im sure an investigation committee has to be put together and there has to be board members from medical schools who agree, all in all its a lengthy process but you gotta start somewhere or else you have a situation where only rich kids are getting into medical school

Thanks for trying to do something about this. I applied to over 20 schools both DO and MD and the fees really kill. especially since you already pay a fee to amcas to send your application. So each school costs an additional 30-50 dollars on top of the schools seconday fees. I got out lots of loans but It seems that this process would be impossible for someone who comes from a poorer background and can not concive of throwing 2-3 grand around just for the chance to apply.

Yeah I was feeling the bite of supplementary apps; Im "self sufficient" (i.e. my family is on the shallow end of the money pool) so there was never a question of whether I would pay the fees myself. It's crazy, especially since the process of applying to residency via ERAS is so much cheaper (essentially it is AMCAS without having to complete secondaries).

I think there should also be a resolution to prevent stupid questions. Dont ask me who I would have dinner with "alive or dead" if I could...ask me why I think I would be a good doctor (ahem, UConn). And the number of essays should be restricted to one or none, unless they are less than 300 words each. This is why I should be the totalitarian dictator of med school apps.

The schools I applied to are probably already on the list. I spent about 1700 on the process, including the 460 I coughed up to AMCAS, and the 12-1100 for the secondaries. Not including travel, and cost of suit/shoes etc. Rediculous.

I hadnt carefully read the post of the person from Canada...I humbly apologize for my complaining about what I spent. My piddly little 1700 is nothing compared to what they spent. Jeez! I think I need an alka-seltzer.

MCAT registration: $175
AMCAS: 39 schools = $1150 + 90 + 30 + 30 = $1300
Secondaries: 35 schools = $2885
Misc (Interfolio, Expressposts)= approx. $350
Interview costs = $2500

ALl in US dollars 🙁

Have you considered looking at an MSAR? They tell you whether schools screen or not and how much money the secondary costs to send in.

The one school that was different from the rest for me was Indiana, which only sends secondaries to students that they are going to interview.

you think about that

all of you

Izzy

Georgetown does charge the most of any school, although they do warn you in the e-mail they send inviting you to sent in a secondary app that if you don't have a certain GPA and MCAT or higher (I think it was around 3.5/3.4sci and 28 MCAT) that it is unlikely you will be selected for an interview. They seem to enforce that rule pretty expediently too...

Many schools don't screen. I don't really think you can force them to do so if they don't want to. The applicant doesn't have to apply there. At least most schools do accept the AMCAS fee waiver for low income applicants.

Touro Harlem (DO) has a secondary fee of $200, I think that's a new record.

Aren't secondary application fees just another way of screening for interest? I think the rationale is that people won't spend $75-$150 if it's a place they would never go anyway.

If I want to be a dr and I have a school who supposedly 'screens' through AMCAS and selects who to send secondaries to, I'll fill out the secondary. If this is the true screening process and they don't filter anyone out of the initial AMCAS pool, then they are taking alot of money from students who don't have a chance in hell of getting in. Some students may fill out EVERYTHING that comes in the mail without thought to how much $$ they are submitting or what the chances really are...I think anything that can be done to lower some of the costs would be helpful. Does it really cost 650k to interview 1500 students???

the problem is that medical schools are taking advantage of desperate times for their applicants, people will do just about anything to help them get into medical school, i seen it, and everyone thinks,
well im a little below average, but if they are sending me a secondary maybe they really liked something in my extracurriculars, or my personal essay from the AMCAS application (which they dont read if you are under the cutoff) and so the student will be obliged to spend hard earned cash on a rejection letter it is entirely unjust
