We have a thread about housing and Opus but we don't have one saying who is definitely going to be attending next fall. Who else will be joining me in Atlanta?

Me!

Apartment hunting is stressing me out. Between work and classes, I just don't have that much time to browse around the web. But I was looking at reviews of apartments in Decatur last weekend, and a lot of them were negative! 😕

Woohoo! I am glad you were able to decide!

I actually went apt. hunting in Atlanta Thursday/Friday. It was SO stressful. I found something though! I move in July 21st! 🙂

After going through Decatur again I definitely prefer Viriginia Highlands. That said, I will be living in neither. I checked out Campus Crossing and if would be a great choice IF they didn't charge 50/month for parking. I just couldn't do it. Highland Square was pretty nice and was my second choice after the property I chose. Clairmont Reserve, Gables Montclair, and Highland Lake all made my head hurt. I hated Post Briarcliff. To each their own I guess. It's almost 700 units, they kept talking about the guards that patrol, and the prices were not great for the actual units for a July/August move in.

I can't believe you already found something! That's great, though. I'm just going to have to rely on the internet because I'm 8 hours away.

I've crossed out Post Briarcliff because of recent crimes, Gables Montclair seemed too uppity (as in, daddy i paying for his spoiled brat...I know, harsh, but I can't help it), and Calibre Woods has undergrads and is a big party place. I didn't get to visit Virginia Highlands while down there, but I'll take your word that it's better than Decatur 🙂

I also decided to go to Emory! I will be moving there in June because I got a summer job in Atlanta. Does anyone have an opinion on the Clarion Apartments? Its in Decatur, but I can't visit because I live too far away.

When do we need to accept financial aid by? If we accept it and don't need it later, can we change it? I didn't need financial aid in undergrad, so I'm confused as to how this all works!

i'm going to emory this fall!

i've applied to campus crossing already...looking for a three-bedroom apartment. it seems like a good place.

me too! super excited! Do you know when we should start applying for work-study jobs and such?

I liked Campus Crossing and probably would have lived there the first year if it wasn't so expensive.

I never ended up checking out Clarion, sorry :-(

Work study jobs will be posted to simplicity starting in early August.

wait.....what made you guys hate Post Briarcliff so much? I just turned in my application

Though I've read some bad reviews about it (mainly crimes), apparently all neighborhoods in Atlanta are more or less crime infested. Some students told me those may be exaggerated. Some even liked the complex.

So I don't really know. Never got to see it.....

hey JMM051...what would you say is a decent price for the Atlanta area? i'm coming from LA and campus crossing seems like a steal...but i'm comparing it to LA prices though.

i read through your other posts in this topic...it seems like you're bringing a car? I'm wondering how feasible is it to live a bit further away without a car...

I'll be joining you guys in the fall too! I will be living at Campus Crossings since I figure it's the easiest choice for me considering I'll be moving without a car from the west coast.

When I went to Visit Day last month, I managed to stop by and they took me on a tour of their model apartment. It looks really nice in there. Everything is new (complex is less than 1 year old), and I love that there's a washer/dryer in unit with complete furnished bedrooms/living room.

hey knitPHgurl!!!

were you planning to get a two (or preferably three for me) bedroom in campus crossings??

i'm coming in from CA too!!!

I am going to EMORY too.. very excited.

I am planning to move there around early Aug. Would it be possible to find an apartment in two weeks? I am also seeking for roommates. Anyone would be interested?

Hey, I'm going to get the 2 bedroom floorplan. Cool, fellow Californian! 🙂 What city are you from?

i also decided to attend Emory 🙂

i'm coming from CA as well and planning to move to Atlanta around late July. i'll probably be shipping my car over there instead of driving.

still apt hunting through PROMOVE. it really sucks that move-in dates during the summer is expensive.

I'm coming in from the LA area.

I called campus crossings and they said cheapest for two bedroom is 680, and for three bedroom is 615. i'm still debating whether the $700+ extra for a two bedroom is worth it...haha.

heej, is Promove helpful?

I just crossed it out b/c of the recent crime. It sucks that most of the apartments are more or less crime infested. *more stress*

Yea, to be honest with you, I think people in Atlanta sort of contribute to that. I can't remember how many times I have been told from people there that "this is Atlanta" " just like all big cities"...... It's this kind of attitude that brings Atlanta to its own demise.

(I've had plenty of experiences with cities that are bigger than Metro Atlanta, and I gotta say, ATL's # are pathetic)

i thought it was helpful since it really saves you time and it's free. promove gives you all the listings of apartments near Emory with the prices, amenities, and photos. they'll also contact the apt offices for you and find out about any special discounts.

I'm coming too for the GEH program! How early do you guys think we need to find a place? I'm coming from New England and don't have the means to visit/pay rent for months before we start in August. I need to find a place nearby or with easy transportation access since I won't have my car. Do you think I could find a place pretty easily in July or should I start really looking soon??

Just a heads up that a lot of complexes have waiting lists for August move-ins. Basically as people give their notice that their moving out spots will open up. Just wanted to let people know so youre not shocked when you get there.

I will be joining you all at Emory as well. I am moving in June, possibly doing a summer internship in Atlanta. I found a place in Decatur.

I'll be joining you all at Emory in the fall!

I'm outsourcing my apt hunting to relatives living in the area as getting to Atlanta from Columbus isn't a practical endeavor for me while school is still going strong.

As for roommates, I think gonna be working through the SPH office or Hillel to find people to live with. I don't want to live in a tiny yet expensive single and I don't feel comfortable with using Craigslist to find a roomie. Hopefully this all works out...

Hi all,

I'll be joining Emory in the Fall! Congrats to you all 🙂

I was curious to know, I paid my deposit online and received an e-mail confirmation that they received it, and it was also removed from my To-Do List on OPUS.

As for the golden Enrollment Decision Form which we had to mail, did you receive an e-mail confirmation of any kind? It (the Enrollement Decision Form) was removed from my OPUS To-Do List about a week after I mailed the form, so can I consider it official that they received it?

Just want to make sure. Thank you!

I will be going to Emory in the fall for MPH global Health.
Unlike most of you ,I will be coming from Africa,I'm wondering if there's anyone like me out there.
If you have any advice for me on how to go about settling down please let me know as i won't be in Atlanta till 1st week of august.

If the enrollment decision form has been removed from your to do list then it means they have gotten it,but if you are still worried you can click on the ask opus link and send a message asking for clarification, you should get an email within 24 hours answering your question.

I received an email saying that they got my deposit, which I sent in the mail with the decision form. But it said nothing about the decision form even though it was removed from OPUS.

i've been reading some stuff in the other threads about appealing for more finaid? does anyone know how successful that will be or what an appeal letter might look like?

I emailed my acceptance form in today for the GEH program. I don't live near Atlanta, so the idea of trying to find an apartment is kind of overwhelming. And I kind of want a roommate, but don't know a soul in Atlanta. I don't know how I'm going to figure that out. WORTH IT, though, to go to Emory!

I tried doing that (over the phone)...no luck whatsoever.

How's the apartment hunting going for everyone?

Are there any females who will be living at Campus Crossings in a 2 BD?

We don't register for classes until June, right?

what's up everyone! I'm really pumped for this... it certainly should be a new experience at a small school in contrast to Michigan lol... I truly hope that I get to meet some cool new people! but anyways, anyone coming to Emory from Detroit/Michigan?

Does being originally from Toledo count? Then yes...

haha it certainly does, it's like a suburb of Detroit... actually if you really think about it if you start in Downtown Detroit, you can probably drive to Toledo faster than some of these northern suburbs... the sprawl is ridiculous lol

Hey everybody,
I'm an undergrad with a couple years left, but saw this thread and thought I might be able to contribute.

I live and go to school in Atlanta (Georgia State) and one thing that we figured out is that if you can find roommates renting a house in Atlanta can be much, much cheaper. I live in big, recently renovated 5-bedroom house in the middle of a triangle formed by Downtown, Little 5 points, and East Atlanta Village (all places of interest) and we are no more than 2 miles from any of those. There are four of us, (so we have one empty bedroom that will be occupied shortly) and we pay $375 a piece now for rent (without utilities). Total rent with utilities is always less than 450. We have a 5th roommate moving in in a month as well and rent will be 300 + very cheap utilities. Anyway the point is that if you can get some people together you may really want to look at houses too.

Also, don't write-off MARTA, lots of people will speak ill of it and it certainly is not the most expansive public transport, but I have used it regularly for 2 years without any major problems. Living close to a MARTA rail stop has been great for me so I would check out places that are close as well. (Although there isn't really a stop that close to Emory so I dunno how much help that is).

There are definitely some areas to avoid, but for the most part there is going to be a little crime everywhere. None of the areas you guys are talking about are that bad of areas. I live in an area that if you are just searching around on the internet may be considered "worse" than a lot of areas of you have listed but I and most people I know walk around at night (I'm 5'6'', white, wear big glasses, weigh 125 pounds) no problem.

I don't know a ton about the housing in Decatur, but the area itself is very cool. It has it's own mini-downtown with a lot of great stuff.

If you guys/gals have some specific questions about Atlanta feel free to ask and I will try to answer as best I can or ask someone who knows more. I think you may like the city more than you think. It has a lot to offer and I really love it here. (note I'm not a "native atlantan" and this certainly isn't a pride thing, I just came here for school and as I got more familiar with it started to like it more than I initially thought I would.)

Sooo...

Anyone check out the class availability yet?

I kind of set out an idea of what I wanted to take looking at the suggested coures. I checked out BIOS 500(intro BIOS) and every section is full. Is this weird to anyone else that the intro BIOS would be full? I didn't run into any of those problems with any BSHE class.

I was wondering how long it takes them to process the final transcript and allow you to register for classes... mine should arrive any day now but I was wondering how long it takes them to sort through it...

just checked out the schedule... all my HPM classes are available but BIOS 500 is indeed all closed... wonder what they're gonna do about it... most likely add a section or two?

Don't worry about schedules. You'll get emails about exactly what your schedule should be before it's time to register. Last year we were enrolled in BIOS ahead of time by the ADAPs. Regardless, I promise you will be in a BIOS class because everyone has to take it.

When/how do we activate our Emory emails?

I'm more worried about keeping the sweet schedule I'm trying to set up 🙂

Some bios times are better than others.

when does class registration start? and what is the likelihood of getting your desired courses? i went to a small school and have never been closed out of a course before.

Last year registration was June 8. You will receive emails from your ADAPs to whatever your current email address is. You will also get information about how/when to set up your Emory email and symplicity accounts.

As for BIOS 500, we didn't have a choice about the section. I'm not sure how they split everyone, but it did seem that all EPIs/GLEPIs were in the same section (Paul Weiss' section, I hope you guys get him--he's awesome!).

Hope that helps! I know there doesn't seem to be a lot of info coming your way from the department right now, but that changes pretty soon. They'll also have the orientation blackboard site up soon, which will answer a lot of your questions.

I'm living in Ann Arbor now and will be heading down to Emory in August. Woohoo!
