I was recently accepted to both Emory and U Mich and I have no idea where I should go. The more I research, the more conflicted I get. I am interested in working in primary care and health care policy on an international level and I don't know which school will better prepare me for my career. My pre-med advisor told me that her contact said it would be a big mistake not to choose U Mich. I know that U Mich is ranked higher in research, but I"m not interested in that. Any ideas?

UMich is good for everything. If Emory can top that, then choose Emory.

If you're interested in public health, Emory's CDC ties will offer you a lot of opportunities. You can't really go wrong here though...I don't know if choosing a school as awesome as Emory is ever a "mistake".

...if you're from the mid-west.

Choose where you'll be happiest. Both Emory and UMich will offer you a great education and all of the resources you could ever want/need to accomplish your goals. Both are fantastic schools with great reputations. Good luck with your choice.

Don't trust someone's opinion who does not even know how to spell Midwest. 😉

BTW UMich has a significantly better reputation, on a VERY NATIONAL level mind you, than Emory (among people that matter, like residency directors, not premeds on a message board). But either way you're going to be an MD so just choose the location you want! But I would say if you surveyed residency directors across the entire country and ask them what are the Top 5 medical schools in the country... University of Michigan would be in the vast majority of them (which is inline with what US News tells you about residency director rankings... the only thing that really [kind of] matters on that list).

I am pasting the same reply from the other forum:

Hi,

I know for a fact that UMich has many great programs for those interested in abroad work and are generous in both money allocated and faculty support! Also, UMich Med excels in everything - you should be honored you are accepted. Emory is great too - but mainly if you want to stay in the south. I am not sure how they are about funding and how tightly knit the CDC is with the medical school even though they are proximal. Anyway, you can't go wrong!

LOL. Fair enough. 😳

I'm just trying to point out that on a national scale, there are probably going to be only negligible differences in repuations within the top 20 schools [Michigan's rep in the Midwest (note correct spelling 😉 ) is much stronger than it is on the coasts - Emory's rep is much stronger in the South]. Things like how well a person fits with a particular program (whether or not a particular school will offer resources that will help the applicant reach his/her specific goals, etc.) are much more important.

BTW, I'll probably be attending UMich for medical school, so this is my completely unbiased opinion. Having visited both schools, I thought UMich was a better fit for me and my goals, but to each his own...
