Does anyone have a particular EMR that they love for FM? I am a second year resident and thinking about starting up a practice......which EMR is the best? The one we use at our residency program is not so good.
If you are operating in the realm of insurance, you'll likely need an EMR just for the ease of billing. But if you make the wise choice to not take insurance, just make your own. This urologist simply used the folders on normal windows XP system and microsoft word.
In primary care the influx of documents is horrendous and you can easily make this work by having the traditional sections of a paper chart be transposed to the corresponding folders on your computer. Go a step further and make everything a PDF format.
People complicate things way too much. The old acronym stands. KISS. (keep it simple stupid)
There are fast scanners for paper documents.
Microsoft word has voice recognition transcription built into that can also work in other programs. Make macros and dictate away like a radiologist. Progress note done.
Only the most technologically-savvy physicians would even attempt to "roll their own" EMR (which eliminates the vast majority of doctors in practice), and even those attempts, like the one you referenced, aren't truly EMRs. They're merely digitized notes and records. Getting usable information out of a hodgepodge "system" like that (e.g., data mining), one of the major benefits of a true EMR, would likely be difficult or impossible.
No single EMR product is a good fit for everyone. The AAFP's Center for Health IT is a good place to start looking for information: http://www.centerforhit.org/
I would also advise checking out this website.. Also, PatientOS is a free 'EMR' that is an open source solution that looks a bit more useful than the Urologist's ideas. Just from glancing over the website, it's definitely a step in the right direction. As far as data mining, e-prescribing, and billing, I'm not so sure. BUT, give it a few months, I bet it will get there.
