Which iphone/ipad app is best? EMRA is cheaper, but I've always been told that Sanford is the 'gold standard' for abx... thoughts?

I would agree that the Sanford guide is probably the gold standard book for antibiotics...

If you are practicing ID, I would use the Sanford guide.... Otherwise, 99.99% of what you need to know about antibiotics is in the EMRA guide when practicing Emergency Medicine. Its the high yield information only for the disease processes we see most. I love it.

On monday I finally put it on my iPhone as they had it at half price (8 bucks!). I have used it twice today already...

Check out this app, put out by Mark Crislip, an ID guy who also does a great podcast. The price is right for the lite version ($0.99 for one year) and unlike sanford which has lots of data but sometimes few specific recommendations, this app has a lot of practical advice for patient management. Plus, lots of funny, sarcastic commentary.

thanks for the tip..ill check it out.

In terms of EMRA vs Sanford.. sounds like people prefer EMRA.. is the interface any easier to use, or is it just that it is cheaper?

I looked into it more.. One concern I have is that EMRA only updated the info in the app twice and that was over a year ago, while Sanford has updated twice per month since it was released.. recommendations can change from time to time and so if the interface of Sanford is just as user-friendly, I am thinking that this might actually be a better option since it seems it might be kept up to date

thoughts?

as one of the EMRA authors, my completely unbiased opinion is that it is the greatest piece of medical literature that mankind has ever known.

sanford is comprehensive, but EMRA is geared towards the ED management of infectious processes. and antibiotic recommendations really don't change on a national level that often - what's more important is the local resistance patterns at your facility.
