at colleges I assume they would make it go the whole length of the semester. but if you take the course at a training center it would vary by whether you are taking the full time course or part time course. Most places also offer condensed summer courses. usually the state's department of health will have a list of all the places where you can take the classes and get information from there.

In NJ I was able to go 9-4, MWF and completed it over the summer. Searching the net for your state's requirements should be pretty doable.

Ohio requires around 130 hours. The classes vary on how often they meet, because the EMT class that I am taking meets twice a week from 5-9pm and runs from September to December. I assume other starts have hours comparable to the 130.

Yup, most courses require 120-140 hours. When I took my course in NJ that came out to either 12 or 16 weeks...it was 5 years ago so I can't remember exactly. The course met two nights a week for four hours plus some Saturdays. I think that's fairly typical, and as others have said full-time or condensed courses are available as well. Good luck pursuing your certification! It's a great field, a lot of fun, and excellent preparation for further medical training. I feel my 3 years experience as an EMT gave me a real advantage compared to my medical school classmates in terms of being comfortable with patients, knowing the basics of a patient interview, etc. that's still benefiting me now as an MS2. It's a great thing to do as a pre-med. So good luck!

Yeah, it varies according to the state. Go to the National Registry's website and that may help. I'm taking the course right now actually. It's awesome and I think it's good knowledge for everyone. Unfortunately, a month after starting the course, I ended up applying some skills first on my mom after she fell unconscious. I'm glad I was equipped with that knowledge.

I am currently taking a emt-b class, which ends in December. I think my instructor told me that the national registry is offered in January. My question is will I be able to work EMS service somewhere until the fall, when with any luck I will start medical school? Or will places be reluctant to bring me on knowing that I will only be working for 6 months or so?

I was an EMT-B in college. My frosh yr, I took a 6 month course during the night (6-9 pm MW) while balancing classes, work, volunteering etc. During the summer, I took the written and entire day practical exam. It def was a good experience and I actually found it fun. 🙂
