EMT or Post bacc Program??

I've been waitlisted at LECOM, my number one choice, and only applied to OU, which I have not heard from yet. My question is, in case I do not get taken off this waitlist and therefore not get in, should I persue getting an EMT for a year, which is some awesome training, or should I do the post bacc. program at LECOM? I applied to it, now I'm just waiting. I think both of these options are great, and I don't know which I would like to do more. I'm thinking that the post bac program will really help me get into LECOM the next year, considering I do well. I think I'll be really prepared for med school after that. I also think getting patient experience with EMT work is awesome too. HELP!!!

I know of someone who was called to LECOM like 2-3 days before the start of classes, so you may not have to do either. In any case, from what I've heard the post-bacc program offers a pretty decent shot of acceptance. Good Luck!!

Thanks! I am prayin that they call me this summer. DId this person have trouble finding a place so late?? Anyone else have an opinion on what I should do??

IT's an emergency medical technician...they go on all the ambulance calls when someone is hurt, injured, and such. Two of my brothers are firemen and EMT's, they like it a lot.

do which ever does a better job of addressing your greater weakness.
if your grades aren't stellar, i'd recommend doing the post-bacc and getting A's
if your grades are up to snuff but you don't have great ECs go emt.

A post-bacc program and an EMT are two very different experiences. If your goal is simply to get into LECOM, do the post-bacc. They will know you better, and will be (hopefully) by your academic prowess. If you take the EMT, all you have is an EC that a lot of people have.

I am both an EMT and in the post bac program at LECOM. If you do not get in this year DO the post bac program. EMT stuff is great, but it will not have as much weight in your adcom file as some good grades in the post bac program. I can tell you that LECOM does take most of the students from the post bac class every year.

I think the post-bacc program would be a good idea if you're going to LECOM. EMT is a blast too, though. How are your EC's? If you decide not to do EMT, you could always volunteer at a local ER... I'm sure you could do that in between grad studies.

assess your application. is your weakness grades/MCAT scores? if so then do the post-bacc. do you think you don't have enough EC's? if so then think about going the EMT route. don't hesitate to call a higher-up in the admissions office to ask what they think you need to work on.

i did my EMT course at a community college and got certified but have only used it to volunteer. i work now as an ER tech and the stuff i learned is very applicable, but you don't absolutely need the certification for the job. maybe look into something like that. basically a tech is the doctors' and nurses' bitch, but you get to do some fun stuff like splinting, blood-drawing, EKGs, being part of a code (this isn't fun, but definately an experience).

EMT-Bs in arizona are basically the bitch of the medics on ALS units and they usually do interfacility transports on the BLS units. although, this is only what i have observed here, so it's probably different in other parts of the country.

FYI, the volunteers in our ED are only allowed to clean beds and waste baskets. check into it before volunteering in the ED to see what volunteers are allowed to do in that ED.

radionut, thanks for the info....I would say my EC's are really really strong. I've done research, volunteered, etc. It was my MCAT that wasn't so hot. I think this post bacc may be the way to go. Lattimer, I will definitely check into all that EMT stuff. I know a lot already with my brothers in the field, but if I could volunteer or what not for a year, I think that would be a lot of fun.
