I know being an EMT has nothing to do with podiatry (well, taking histories might count), but would it be a negative in applying to Podiatry Schools? I'm actually really interested in Podiatry but I also want to pursue a worthwile experience and helping out people at the same time. I'm pretty much open to medicine (MD/ DO) and DPM. It's 50-50 right now. As someone who has experienced his share of foot problems, I am very much interested in Podiatry. I just hope being an EMT doesn't appear that DPM is a "back up", which definately is NOT the case.
Thanks!

I can't really imagine that patient exposure as an EMT could hurt you. If anything, I would think it shows that you are interested in the medical field and in helping people. Part of it could depend on how you feel about your experience, and how well you convey that feeling to admissions committees. If you play it right, it could be a huge plus on your applications, IMO. But then again, I'm not the admissions committee. If I was, I would have gotten into AZPod already:laugh:

I ride an ambulance myself. I figure it'll be a huge plus. Patient care is something i was told ALL med schools look for, and as an EMT you get a ton of that. Also just the experience of being put in pressure situations is good. I want to say dont worry about it too much and count it as a strength.

Kool 🙂

I'm about to sign up for the EMT course and going to email a podiatrist at a nearby hospital during break and see if I can shadow him

EMT will help you out. Any job which gets you comfortable dealing with patients and the health care system is a plus.

In my program, we take BLS, ACLS, PALS, and emergency/trauma. I think most other pod programs are similar. It will help you in those classes since you'll already be familiar with CPR, AEDs, etc. I'm sure it'd also be a pretty big help when you do 3rd year ER rotations...

I think being an EMT could only help you get into school AND help you during clinicals.

Speaking from personal experience, I am an EMT-basic (used to volunteer at my undergrad and worked for an ambulance service during the summer). Now I'm a first year podiatry student at Scholl. I'm pretty sure having that background can only aid in getting you into a school. In fact, a lot of the skills I picked up when training to be an EMT (and also when on the field), have helped me with my clinical class.

that's great to hear 🙂

I just signed up for it 2 days ago and can't wait to start!
