Hey guys, just wondering about my GPA. After Freshmen year (29 total Credit Hours), I have a 3.27 GPA (Not great). My question is, do I have plenty of time to pick it up and is it looked at prior to admission? Thanks all..

Chris

Yes, you have plenty of time. Just don't keep up a habit of a 3.27. Work extra hard to get those A's. If you want to enter med school the year after you graduate, schools will consider your grades from the first 3 years. You could take a year off though and bring your GPA up some more.

EDIT: Just did some quick math. If you keep taking 30 hours a year (which I'd suggest maybe adding a few more in) and you get a 3.75 from here out, you'd have a 3.59 at the end of you Junior year. It's not amazing, but it's good.

I think with my freshman year 3.0, I have the potential to get it up to a 3.7ish, so yeah.

Good to hear. I had some issues outside of school (sick), that hurt one of my class grades so I couldnt do anything about that. Ive only taken 1 Prerequisite for my Medical needs so I think Im ok. That and Ive only taken 29 credit hours total. Hopefully next semmester I can bring it up with my 18 Credit Hour Semmester... 🙂

Unless you all think 18hrs is too much to take in a semmester? I need to take both Chem and Bio to be able to apply for Nursing school in the fall...... So 18 hours eventually added up.

Oh, you're pre-nursing?? That's cool. And I don't think 18 is too bad. I mean as long as you don't have a bunch of labs in there.

Yeah I am pre-nuring, but really want to go to med school. If I cant get into med school and go nursing (knock on wood I do get into med-school!) I want to be an anesthesiologist 🙂. Ill have 2 labs, but they are at night. Is 2 labs too much? It is ok to add some fluff classes in the summer since I will be here for other classes anyways? Just to help boost the GPA?

My two cents...
I got into a med school with a 3.4. Don't get freaked too much over your grades. Fluff courses are fine, but try not to make it too entirely obvious what you're doing. A good way to boost your GPA is to pick a minor that's easy for you, so you can claim a legitimate interest in the subject later on down the road. Two labs is a lot, but shouldn't be too much. Good luck!

it'll brign him up to a 3.7 + 🙂

Thanks for all the opinions guys. The more the better. It is good to hear that someone has gotten in with a 3.4 as well. I am working on plently of EC's this summer so that should help my outside of school volunteer work.

I also learned that being sick with a bad combination of laziness really hurt me. Time to severly tighten up for next year. 😀 I know I can do it and I know the consequences now.

Haha ksmi, I was kind of wondering if I could have done better than that. 😛

man procastination and laziness is really bad! i've been doing okay in my classes (a's and B in o-chem) with so much procastination...

I have a really bad hunch that my current attitude towards schools isn't gonna work out in the higher level classes i'll be taking starting next year! next year = my app year, research, + time to build some EC's (im late in the game for EC's) + take the MCAT +maintain the GPA = i'm going to have no life next year... i guess the parties are gonna end after this summer... sucks! but on the long run it pays off...

so keep ur head up and good luck!

I'm the worst math major in the history of earth. 🙁

Well if you get a 3.75, you'd have a 3.59...

well, atleast u are a math major hehe.. i took my calc 2 final today and completely forgot tht int of 1/1+x^2 = arctanx... it was in the 15 points problems and i think i got them all wrong .. hopefully i'll earn some partial credits....

👍 Thank you for working out the numbers for the OP getting a 3.75 from here on out, which is totally realistic. I always think it's ridiculous when people come in off a rough first year and everyone says...if you get a 4.0 you'll end up with X score!

OP, aim for a 3.75+ from here on out. Obviously, higher is better, but don't lose your hope over the occasional non-A. Lot of people struggle their first year of college. :luck:

Yeah that was my intention, but I screwed up typing... 🙁

Oh man, this sums up my next year perfectly. This year was pretty important too but for some reason it took an enormous amount of effort to even begin studying...then I just stopped caring and tried to wing it. That was a mistake. I gotta learn some time management skills!!!

yes. i had a 2.9 after my first semester as a fresh, and pulled it up to 3.55 by graduation- just figure out why it happened, and take necessary steps. gl!
