Hi all, I just ended my sophomore year of undergrad. I have one more year until I apply to medical school, and would like opinions on what I can do throughout the next year to maximize my chances. I currently go to a typical large state school, however am interested in going to a top 20 MD school.

Major: Biology BS (Celluar/Physiology Concentration)
Cumm GPA: 3.91
Science GPA: 3.90

Research:
  • 100 hours in Toxicology, working with human lung cancer and chromate
  • Just started full time for the summer, so expect to have completed 400 hours by the end, will keep doing research throughout my junior year.
  • I will most likely get a presentation / poster from my summer project, and will have the opportunity to work with NASA a weekend of this summer at the Kennedy Space Center.

Clinical Experience:
  • Start working a second job next week as a Patient Care Assistant at a University Hospital. Plan to have 500+ hours of working experience through this position by application time next year.
  • 36 hours worth of Emergency Medicine / Trauma shadowing.
Volunteering:
  • Work with a club at my school that tutors/mentors kids at the local / lower income elementary. I have accumulated 20 hours worth, and expect to have another 30 by the time I apply.
  • I am starting to volunteer for a local organization where you get paired with a foster child, and become their buddy. I am super excited about this, and want to do 2 hours a week throughout the summer.
  • 10 hours volunteering through Project Sunshine at the local children's hospital, plan to accumulate 30-35 more hours by the time I apply.

Extra Curriculars:
  • Sorority - leadership positions include Panhellenic Delegate, Recruitment Party Head, Philanthropy Dance Show Coach, Academics Board, and New Member Committee member
  • Project Sunshine - Executive Council Position of Social Chair
  • Cardinal Club - tutoring club I mentioned above
  • Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity
I am an honors student, also. Overall, I know I need to complete more shadowing hours to meet the expectations, and up my volunteering hours! Let me know what I should work on this next year to hopefully get into top schools! (I know MCAT weighs a lot)

So far this looks very good. Make sure you actually get above 100 hours for both clinical and non-clinical at least, which it seems like its in order.

Now you need to get an incredible MCAT and you will be solid for interviews at Top 20. After that, I'm afraid its a crapshoot.

That's a cool research experience at the space center BTW.
