endocrinology

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm definitely interested. Here at Columbia, we have an internal medicine interest group... they just had a dinner where docs from different IM fields sat at different tables (I was at the table with the endocrinologist). I'm especially interested in maybe being a fertility specialist (and having my patients send thank you notes with photos of their little babies on them, haha... kidding... kind of 🙂 ).
Anyway, if you haven't checked them out, there are a lot of residency books like Iserson's that can give a vague idea of what it's like.

Have you shadowed any endocrine docs? I bet there are a bunch who would be glad to have you around.

Awesome, i'll try to look for that book! I haven't been able to find much information online about this...I'm really interested in studying auto-immune diseases. What year are you in med school and how are you liking it? From what I've gathered so far, the road to becoming an endo takes about 10 years after undergrad. now thats a long time 😱
I haven't shadowed any endos but would like to. Do you just call their office and ask if you can shadow?
Thanks for the info!

I'm a second year. I like it a lot -- and it's a heck of a lot better than first year! In terms of auto immune diseases, you might want to also look into Immunology and Rheumatology. I feel like that might be more up that alley.

Yeah, it might take just under 10 years to become an endocrinologist after undergrad... 4 for med school, 3 for internal medicine, and probably 1-2 more to specialize after that.

In terms of shadowing... if you're an undergrad, maybe your school has a program to set you up with docs?

In terms of peds endocrine, I think I heard somewhere that they do a lot of developmental disorders... like, why is my kid so tall/short? Why is my 18 year old daughter not menstruating yet? Stuff like that....
