Hello all, this is my first post on SDN so just bare with me! So I am a Pre-Dental student and have always wondered how residency programs sort through applicants and find the top 10% to go into a specialty like endodontics? Aren't most dental schools Pass/Fail? And also, is it really true that ONLY the top 10% specialize or can someone who is average get in? Excuse my ignorance, I new to this forum. I appreciate all of your feedback thanks!

I think most schools are on a graded system so you will have a gpa and more importantly a class rank. If a school isn't pass/fail they usually still keep track of this info for this purpose. How high you need to be in your class depends on what specialty. Ortho is usually someone that is top 3-5 in the class (not always, just my observation). Our endo program just requires you to be top 30%...sometimes a higher rank doesn't get you in just because you have a personality that they don't want. Remember the professors and other residents have to spend every day with you, they don't want someone they won't get along with.
