Engineer Applying for DS

Hi everyone,

I know I know. I did my search on SDN, but couldn't find what I was looking for...😕

So, I'm an engineer applying for Dental School. In my personal statement, is it recommended to dis engineering or not?
I mean, do I have to be like "engineering doesn't fit me. I hate it. It's not for me..." or do I have to be more like "engineering is good, but I enjoy dentistry the most?"

Any help is appriciated.
Btw, being an ESL, I hate writing with a passion lol. My personal statement is taking me Years lol

I am not a pro at writing PS, but IMO, I wouldn't say it doesn't fit me or you hate it. I just want to avoid any negative tone. I would rather connect them together and show how you became interested in dentistry from your study.

IDK, man. English is my second language, too. I also took a month to write it.

I am a software engineer whos starting DS next month.... I'be more than happy to share my personal statement with you...

I was an engineer as well.

The only paragraph from my personal statement to really address my past engineering side:

"I was first attracted to engineering by searching for opportunities to solve problems and design solutions; two attributes of my life I am unwilling to relinquish. However, I saw how healthcare had afforded my wife the ability to provide a better quality of life for her patients. This intimate relationship was an amazing aspect of healthcare that I was unable to achieve from engineering. I found dentistry while searching for a profession that would allow me to blend knowledge and tools I gathered in engineering with the personal relationships offered in healthcare. I discovered not only would dentistry allow me to connect with patients, but would also provide more areas for creative design and solving problems than environmental engineering could impart. The more I analyzed my non-traditional path to a career in dentistry, the more the path made complete sense."




I think you can easily come across as grateful for your engineering background (which is a huge asset), while showing that dentistry will essentially fill in gaps where engineering has left you disenchanted.

The admissions committee will know that you want to change from engineering to dentistry, so you are obviously not satisfied with engineering. However, keep the tone of your personal statement positive rather than negative. Instead of saying "I don't like x, y, and z about engineering," say something like "Dentistry offers x, y, and z, which really appeal to me in a way that engineering cannot."

I would mention how an engineering background (left-brained thinking) can be used as an advantage in the technical side of dentistry.

From your paragraph it sounds like you are seeking the human interaction side of your career that can be acheived through patient care...

Always use your background as an asset.... engineering has provided you a foundation...

I bet you would do wonders in dental lab techniques.... 🙂

Yes, I agree with that too. I may know how they think, but I didn't know how to go around it and how to play with the words. Thanks

I just graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas. I definitely considered it an advantage and a positive part of my application, so I made sure to address why in my personal statement. I agree with all the stuff about the left brain thinking, etc.... just be positive and confident that it was a good experience for you and that you are now ready for dental school.

I will be attending Baylor starting next month.
