My brother recently graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in electrical. His GPA wasn't great (~3, he was struggling with other issues for a while) but I believe he had an upward trend. He wasn't involved in research, never took on an internship, and didn't volunteer. His only ECs were free running and lifting. Doesn't sound impressive at all.

He recently joined the army, has completed basic and is almost finished with Airborne, and is training to get into Ranger School and possibly being a medic after that. He's doing very well and is beginning to consider what he wants to do in the future, which might not be engineering. He was kind of pressured into it by my mom in the first place anyways. He recently told me that he's thinking about becoming a doctor after the army and a few more years of school (since he hasn't taken any biology, biochemistry, psychology). I'm sure he could do well grade-wise if he took classes he was actually interested in. He's also extremely compassionate and kind, and sincerely wants to help people.

I was told that being in the military can help your chances of getting into medical school, which seems very unlikely, but can anyone verify/disprove that? I'm worried that he won't have a chance given his lack of volunteering, low GPA, and no clinical experience (which I supposed might be covered if he were to be a medic). He also seems a bit naive about what's needed to be a competitive applicant. Does anyone have any advice/insight into what he should do?

Thank you for reading!

-He wasn't involved in research,
-didn't volunteer. He recently joined the army, has completed basic and is almost finished with Airborne,
-As a nonTraditional applicant, he doesn't need research.
-Joining the military pretty much covers "volunteering" nicely and is a definite plus for a med school application.
