so i've noticed that most schools require two english courses prior to matriculation. i only took one english course in undergrad, but i took 2 american culture courses and like 12 philosophy courses, a lot of which were very writing intensive.

i'm sure it will vary from school to school but IN GENERAL, do you think this will satisfy that requirement?

Probably not. In general, they'll only count if it is taken through the english department. Its just like how engineering classes don't count as science classes even though many of my engineering classes have been more science intensive than my straight science stuff. Always call and ask the schools though.

I asked this question to my premed advisors, and they said that it may be possible to pass a writing intensive philosophy as an English, with consent from the instructor, but it is of course safer and easier to just take an English.

I didn't take any classes from my English department. That might have been a problem at one of the nine schools I applied to, but I'm not sure. I took several courses in political science and some literature courses for material that was translated into English, and could easily make the case that they were writing intensive.

Edit: After looking at the Haverford PDF, I guess it's just that the schools that applied to were the exception, not the rule.
