Hi, all! I will be starting my undergrad at UT-Austin this fall as an English major on the English B.A. track while simultaneously attempting to take medical school pre-reqs. I come to SDN to ask if anyone has any suggestions regarding which classes to take and when to take them so I can satisfy both the B.A. in English and the medical school pre-reqs in about four years. In addition to the normal school year, I plan to take classes over the summer starting the summer after my freshman year. I feel very overwhelmed about pursuing both tracks and constantly question how possible this pathway actually is. Any advice and/or tips for this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here is a sample degree plan for the B.A. in English (it's from 06-08 but it's all relatively the same):

English B.A. requirements:

Thanks again.

First thing to learn, no one works for you yet...

I think this is doable. You will not have much time for EC's however. So a lot of people just do their four year degree and follow up at a bost-bac program which usually gives you a masters in some specific health science but at the end satisfies all the pre-reqs medical colleges are looking for. But your plan does sound doable.

Test the waters, see if you have the patience and composure to deal with doing pre-med work as well as your lower division work for your B.A.

best of luck!

Thanks for the response. I'm looking at some medical school requirements right now and calculus is not required for admission. Would it be advisable to forgo calculus in order to focus on other subjects?

I majored in English. It wasn't bad at all. I planned it all on my own pretty much too. Just keep up with everything and plan it out well. You should check if you any of your prereqs satisfy some GE requirements also, that way you don't have to worry those.
