Hi All, I'm english, but went through university and med school in the states. I'm wondering whether someone could explain to me how psych residency works in the UK...the duration of training, the way it's broken up, whether I'd have to jump through multiple hoops to go from the US to the UK...Thanks so much.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/ has the information that you are looking for, as far as Psychiatry training goes.

Note that the training to become a consultant in the UK is much longer than in the US.

As far as jumping through hoops for registration, check out the GMC at http://www.gmc-uk.org

Good luck.

The short answer is that if you went to medical school outisde of the the EU and want a training job you will have to sit the PLAB. However, this may be changing in 6 months or so. The RCPysch will recognise psychaitry training fromt eh US, once you're a consultant/attending providing you also do a fellowship- they ahve a 5 year minimum training requirement. And given the training program in the UK can take 7 years...
