It's a little late in the year already, but I've been having increasing doubts about doing ENT as a long-term career. Had originally planned to go into general surgery but fell down my rank list to my backup specialty ENT. Didn't reapply for the Match this year because of intern schedule, and thought I'd give ENT a try but have found my interest and passion lay in general surgery.

Am at a top ENT program at an academic center, and will be finishing PGY-1 soon. Am looking for an academic Gen Surg program to start PGY-2. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested. Thanks!

So you didn't match General Surgery and your back up was ENT? And somehow after not matching in Gen Surg you managed to end up at a top ENT program as your back up. I guess all of this is possible but sounds really unlikely just based on objective match data. If you are serious, your best bet for Gen Surg is the program where you currently are. Have you spoken to the PD there?

If you were strong enough to match at a top ENT program, you shouldn't have trouble switching to gen surg. Your PD is always the first move whenever truly considering a career change. The gen surg PD at your home program would be the 2nd. I assume you rotated with Gen Surg during your intern year, if you did well you shouldn't have trouble getting his/her backing.

I agree with Pir8, all very peculiar.

Fictional or not, I'm somewhat amused by the "swap" concept, as if the program directors from the two respective programs would accept such an arrangement.

Yeah, it's funny how people act as if swapping residency positions is as simple as swapping spouses.

Wait, what?

How the hell is ENT backup for Gen Surg. I thought it usually worked the other way around.

A classmate of mine ranked gen surg programs higher than ent (they were having a change of heart) and ended up matching into their like 10th pick which was ent. Stranger things can happen... Tens of thousands of applications each year, you can expect the unexpected

that's what you get for applying gen surg at top places.

Interviews are peculiar. My top pick in residency (gen surf) was not anywhere near as theoretically "competitive" as my number 3 where I ultimately matched.
