Hi everyone,
I'm planning on taking a prerequisite during my application semester (fall 2007), and also generally taking a solid course schedule full of important/valuable science credits (advanced cell bio, etc) which I think are relevant to my application. How do I find out which schools will take my end-of-semester grades into account during the decision process? There doesn't seem to be easy access to this info online, at least not this early in the game. I'm especially interested in Cornell, UPenn, NCSU, Wisconsin, Tufts, and Davis, if you happen to know off the top of your head.

THanks!

I can't answer for Cornell of NCSU, but you mail your transcript with Fall grades for Tufts and UPenn. Davis doesn't care, and doesn't want them as far as I know. But I was missing a Davis pre-req at the time of application (took it last quarter) and was interviewed and accepted.

Wisconsin asks for fall transcripts. My guess is that most schools do, especially if you are completing a pre-req fall semester.

Good luck! :luck:

in VMCAS, there is a section for planned prereq's and you can list those that you are expecting to take there. once you have the grades, then just mail the transcripts to the schools. even if its something you are going to be doing in the future, i'd mention it if it would help your application.

What about experience, specifically? is there a way to call up the schools after October and add a significant vet experience or number of hours?

You can send them an update letter if you have significant experience that you want to share with them. That way, the information will be added to your file.

Also, even though some schools look at your fall transcripts (and request them) they consider the GPA you sent in on your VMCAS (or card, as is the case with Penn) and your transcripts are just to ensure that you aren't slacking off. As someone said, include can include your course work in the planned courses section (though the only required classes to include are pre-reqs).

i had to take 4 pre-reqs this year and I applied this fall... Most of the schools I applied to had specific deadlines for getting in fall grades... this was a slight problem for me as one of my classes did not end until late january and grades were not posted until early feb, weeks after most of the deadlines... all i did was call each of the schools and they put a note into my file just so it was known that I did not fail the class and it was just a late ending course. So unfortunately (since I got an A in that class) it was not able to be part of my applicant packet. Tufts was the only school that did not have a hard and fast deadline and said to just mail the transcript whenever it became available... and now my acceptance is pending getting at least a C in the last pre-req class and I just have to mail my transcript by the middle of july...

and as far as experience, I was asked at my interviews, so, what have you done since your application... and I was still doing exactly what I had been doing when I applied.. same full-time research job, so it was an easy answer 🙂

Kind of along these same lines..

I was asked to list my exam grades so far this semester, in each of my classes. (For the current (SPRING) semester). I know a lot of people who were "sure" they'd get in, who slacked off a little this semester and had to list out their less then perfect exam grades to their interviewers- eww.

I don't know how common it is for interviewers to ask you to list grades for the current semester, but as others have said - sending Fall transcripts in is quite common...especially when applying in-state.

Guess it depends on the school. Wisconsin has a supplemental app. that is due at the beginning of Dec. It has a section specifically for Veterinary/Animal Preparatory Experience that asks you to "List and describe additional veterinary/animal experience that you gained after submitting your VMCAS application." There is a similar section for other preparatory experiences.

I had just been offered a vet tech job around the time the VMCAS was due, so I listed it under vet experience but with 0 hours, and named some of the responsibilities I thought I would have. In my interview with Davis they asked me what I'd been doing since turning in the application - it was a perfect question for me and it really impressed them because I'd been working full time + school.

if you know ahead of time, write what you expect to be doing, but dont write down any hours. if you do something you didnt know about later, you can email the admissions office or something like that. and be sure to mention it when the interviewers ask you if there is anything you would like them to know.
