Entering straight into PGY-2 ?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it possible to skip PGY-1?

Nope.

Or did they have to do PGY-1 in another residency?

Yep.

In order to complete a psychiatry residency one has to complete an internship either in psychiatry or in another residency that meets the requirements to become board certified in psychiatry. I'm sure more senior members could give specifics.

interesting...

I wonder why most of those psychiatry grads didn't enter PGY-1 psychiatry.
:scared:

I'm no program director but lets analyze this....

You have 4 months IM requirement... so if you had a residency from before, they can use that to fullfill the 4 months requirement. You also have two months neurology requirement. If you went to IM residency, chances are you had a neurology rotation and that can be used to satisfy these 2 months.

So the best you can do is be 6 months ahead no issues..

On the other hand, some of your rotations may be considered as a substitute for fourth year electives. This is possible but unlikely. But if you did 1 year of transitional year.. you might have rotations to help fullfill these electives.

Best you can do is probably 8 months credit... BUT..

You might be required to be paid as a PGY 2 because you finished a previous residency that is ACGME approved.. the residency program will have to figure out how to fund them.

E.g. A third year surgery resident punched a surgeon attending, went to anger management, decided psychiatry is a much cooler residency and wants to go to psychiatry.... they dont need to start at the bottom.
