Entry level Dentist Moving to Bay Area or Raleigh. Advice on which is best?

Hello, getting ready to graduate from dental school (general) and want to make the move to the bay area but was wondering if I would be better off moving to a more affordable place like Raleigh, NC. Any advice or idea what entry level earn (salary/commission) in either place would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

SF Bay area? Raleigh NC (or for that matter almost anywhere in NC) would offer FAR better opportunities for a GP right now.

I've had a chance to live in both and enjoyed them both equally. Lots to do in both areas but your money will go a lot further in Raleigh. But I'd think ultimately someone's enjoyment of an area would come down to their social group. Check out Cameron Village if you're looking for where you can find young professionals in Raleigh.

450-500 as an IC in bay area which means you technically make 400 after taxes. Cost of living is 2000-2500+ for a single room in some hole. Mind you my mortgage on a 3000 sq ft house is 2500. You could move into a house with some roomates which alot of my friends did. Live in a house in 4 other people paying 500-700 a month. Not knocking on the bay area, but I used to live there for 2 years.

Dentists are open late hours, open on weekends, open on Fridays, and working with alot of HMO insurance. I moved out bay area and made double working 4 days a week.

On the plus side, bay area "was' fun at a specific point in my life, but when it came down to settling down and moving out of my young 20's life, it made more sense to go elsewhere.

Raleigh would be a much smarter move.

How was the pay in Raleigh? Not sure of your ethnic background but was discrimination/racism apparent there? Im Pakistani, my husband is Arab, and we are muslim. We would like to start a family in the next few yrs, and the KKK/confederate crap in the news lately in NC is unappealing. Thank you for your feedback.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I did not live there as a dentist. I have a non traditional background and spent time in Raleigh when I was a consultant. Raleigh is a part of the research of triangle. It's a large banking and IT hub with people from all different backgrounds. I've never personally witnessed any discrimination or hostile work environments. Small minded and intolerant people exist everywhere. I don't believe this something specific to the south. I can't speak to pay for a dentist but the bureua of labor statistics shows NC as one of the higher paying states in the US. Keep in mind that UNC dental is right there in
