Are Eosinophils involved in "non-specific DIRECT DESTRUCTION of foreign invaders or infected cells"???
I thought only neutrophils, natural killer cells and macrophages are involved in direct destruction....

This is what I have for eosinophiles:

Eosinophils contain receptors for IgE on their cell surface.

Yes, they also participate in defense against parasites but the IgE makes me want to believe it's not a non-specific defense.

In humans 5 diff. types of antibodies have been found. IgE being one of them.

According to Schaums's

"IgE tends to promote the release of histamine by mast cells when it binds to its antigen. It has also been associated with the bodys fight against parasites as well as with allergic reactions. Antibodies are the primary weapon of the humoral response. They may attack an antigenic organism or molecule directly, or they may activate related systems..."

I am trying to figure out why achiever says Eosinophiles are non-specific and are involved in direct destruction of invaders etc. but Basophiles are specific and are not directly involved.... Eosin. and baso seem to have similar functionalities.
