Hello All,

Since submission day is soon upon us, I figured I might as well make an interview thread. This is going to be a weird cycle with the virtual interviews and whatnot.

Also, if anyone has thoughts on programs, please post them here. Personally, it has been difficult for me to get a sense of what programs I should target (I want to match externally, ideally). EP is such a small world, and it seems that some of the big names have reputations of producing not so great proceduralists due to low volumes.

I've pieced together my own thoughts based on conversations with faculty and scouring the forum and internet here. I will put them down in a separate post. Would welcome any other opinions as well.

Here's what I've gathered about programs just by talking to people in the field. It is by no means extensive and might be terribly wrong in some cases. Unfortunately, it's all I have to go on, and with virtual interviews it may be difficult to get an accurate feel of any place we go to. We won't be able to meet/talk to each other on interview days, so maybe this could be a substitute for that. Current EP fellows, please chime in if you stumble across this thread, too. It would be greatly appreciated.

Somethings that concern me--I've had some EPs tell me (who've trained at big names) that they never did a device by themselves all the way through until they were an attending (especially LV leads). It seemed like many places don't let the fellows be the primary operator, as opposed to what we are used to in the interventional setting. Not sure why EP culture is like that at many places...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penn: Amazing for VT ablation. OK for device training, I think? Everyone I met from there is very well-trained with great skills, but a little bit of a chip on their shoulder. Reputation of being malignant, though from what I've heard it is less so now than in the past. Hours are still very long. Reportedly a beautiful hospital and facilities. Very hands-on. I would assume you would be a very desirable candidate at academic centers after training.

Michigan: Don't know too much about this place, except that it has a great reputation. Get to work with Dr. Morady. Seems like you get well-rounded training.

Vanderbilt: Have heard nothing but good things about this place. Sounds like a well-rounded program with great experience in devices and both AF and VT ablations. Lots of big name faculty, especially Dr. Stevenson. Seems like the hospital system in general is expanding and trying to hire big names in multiple departments (pre-COVID at least)

Mayo: Great for research. Dr. Asirvatham is a big name. Have heard rumors that fellows do not get to do much and may lack procedural skills when you finish.

Hopkins: Similar to Mayo in that it has a good name, great research, but I heard the procedural skills coming out may be lacking.

Cleveland Clinic: Obviously a huge name in cardiology, but I don't know anything about their EP program and have never met anyone who has trained there. I've heard some of the faculty speak and they seem great, but don't know how the procedural experience is. Any insight would be appreciated.

Boston Programs: Surprisingly, I have not heard a lot of positive things about Boston programs. Brigham seems to have the best reputation, with Dr. Tedrow. A lot of their big names left a few years back to Vanderbilt. I have heard conflicting things about MGH--some have told me fellows actually get to do a lot, while others have said its primarily research oriented. No clue what the volumes are like. BIDMC I do not know much about, but I did hear when Dr. Josephson was alive, there seemed to be more of a focus on theory than procedural skills. Don't know if that is still the case. Tufts--all I know is Dr. Estes left. They have a lot of HF/transplant, so you would assume there would be a lot of EP as well, but I don't really know. BU--I know nothing about.

NY Programs: I have heard a lot of good things about Cornell actually. Seems like a well-rounded program. On the opposite end, I've heard a lot of scoffing when I bring up NYU, but I don't know why...anyone have any insight into this? Sinai also has a big name, and Dr. Vivek Reddy is there, though I hear fellow interaction with him is limited. On paper, at least, it seems like a very strong program. I know nothing about Columbia or any of the other NY hospitals.

VCU: I heard good things about this place, but it doesn't seem to be listed in ERAS, which makes me assume that it has internally filled.

UWash: I have actually heard a lot of positives about this program. Not as big of a name as some of the other places, but seems like a well-rounded program and a supportive environment. Don't know what job placement is like in academics after or nationwide in private practice.

UC Denver: Another place that I've generally heard positive reviews, with no specifics.

UCSF: My knowledge is limited here. Strong research.

Stanford: Limited knowledge of this place. Again, heard that they have strong research, with a more basic science bent? However, Apple Heart study PI was here I believe.

UCLA: Dr. Shivakumar is well known in VT ablation. I think some prior post on sdn mentioned procedural volumes may be low. I don't have any insight into this.

Northwestern: I am applying here just based on their virtual fellow's conference, which has been great. Don't know how the volumes are.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Good luck to everyone this season.

Last year the EP application thread put together a whatsapp group to communicate and network among applicants? Any interest in doing that this year? Especially since we won’t have the chance to meet up in person this year.

If so personal message and I can start up a group.

Any news about Emory? They are nor participating, probably filled, tried emailing waiting for a confirmed answer.

Yes Emory has been filled internally, a while ago, for July 2021 as per my communication with the program coordinator.

This is great and will be very useful given the uniqueness of this application season. I wondering when interviews will start rolling this season considering the truncated cycle.

Started a whatsapp group. Any 2021 EP applicants interested in joining to network among each other, personal message your full name/number/program you’re at and I’ll add you. Thanks.

1 month is done since the applications released (Aug 12th). Thus far ~50 programs have sent out interview invites.

Also for any 2021 EP applicants interested in joining to network among each other, send me a personal message with your full name/number/program you’re at and I’ll add you to our WhatsApp group. Been very fun and helpful so far to learn from each other. Thanks

What is everyone's opinion on virtual interviews? So far I think it is difficult to get a good feel for the programs. When I was interviewing for residency and cards fellowship, I always had a different take on the program after I went there in person compared to what I had heard about it or read about it before hand. I think we are missing out on the indescribable "vibe" that you get from interviewing in person. It's making me less and less likely to want to leave my home institution. Anyone else feel this way?

Georgetown advertises that a fellow can expect to do 1000 ablations and 1000 device implantations during fellowship. Is this good or too much?

That's more than 2 devices and 2 ablations a day over 48 weeks each year. Seems fairly unrealistic unless all you are doing is quick flutter and AVNRT ablations and uncomplicated dual chambers.

Makes sense.
