We will be starting equine anatomy tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about textbooks or other resources. Are there any online atlases or DVDs that would help? For small animal anatomy, the DVD Virtual Canine Anatomy saved me and I heard that there is a DVD called The Glass Horse, but it doesn't include the internal organs. Anyone have any suggestions. I also saw Cornell's site on horse dissections that looked helpful, but would appreciate any other advice. Thanks! 😀

See if your school has the glass horse available electronically -- I think that it's wicked expensive to buy but it's a computer application that a lot of people in my class found really helpful.

I also own CLinical Anatomy of the horse. I think it would have been helpful if I'd actually used it ... I didn't really thinka bout it until most of the way through the semester, but it's all pictures (real photos) and seemed helpful.

Good Luck!

I own this book too - got it for a basic equine anatomy text and have kept it as a reference, and I'm anticipating that it'll be incredibly useful. It has a good combo of real photos of dissections, radiographs, etc. that make it a great book. And it's not 90000 pages long.

I am looking for exactly the same thing. I loved Virtual Canine. I also had similar Radiology program for studying radiographs. Just wish I could find something for Large Animal Medicine!

I think The Glass Horse does have internal organs, because I believe a professor was showing us the different types/causes of equine colic using the animations on that DVD.......

Grain of salt - My only experience with it was through this professor, though our vet library did have a copy of it. It might be worth checking out further.

Dr. Whalen is working on the Virtual Equine Anatomy DVD as we speak (and a Canine Neuroanatomy DVD). Sucks that it won't be ready in time for your class, but it still would be a handy resource for you (and all of us!) in the future if you'll be working on equine patients.

Budras is really good. Unfortunately I did not buy it and I use other people's.... steer clear of the Orsini and Sack one.... it's a dissection guide, and IMO it is worthless because it does not have any pictures or illustrations relevant to the in depth anatomy dissection we do in class...
