This is probably not the right place for me to be asking this, but I've tried e-mailing the course administrators and I can't get a hold of any upper classmen, so I thought I'd try here. In my third year in Europe, so we start our clinical rotations soon.

Do I need a fancy stethoscope? I have a normal, completely non-fancy one. Will that do?

What about hammer and penlight, etc? And white coat? How was it for you guys? What else do I need?

Tank you-tank you.

When I was in medical school, we were given a list of things to buy. Certain things, such as white coats, may be subject to local requirements and/or traditions, so I'd check with the people at the school on that one. A stethoscope is definitely required. There's a thread entitled "Stethoscope" on this forum, which should give you lots of detail regarding which one to get. Other equipment, such as a reflex hammer, penlight, tuning fork, goniometer, etc. come in handy from time to time, but are not really essential to carry on your person. In a pinch, the edge of a stethoscope diaphragm can function as a reflex hammer. Some enterprising soul has even designed a stethoscope attachment to make this easier (see photo and link - I've never tried it). 😉
