Quick question from a psychology student:
We are looking for a very basic, inexpensive sound level meter we can use to calibrate some of our equipment. We measure response to startling noises, so participants are played very brief (i.e. 25-50 millisecond) noises that range from about 70db to about 100db via headphones.
We're trying to do this cheaply...we were quoted ~$10,000 for a sound level meter that did what we needed, along with a million other things that we will never, ever, use it for.
The problem I'm running into is that most of the non-professional ones either
1) Can't be coupled with headphones or
2) Can't accurately measure the maximum sound level over such a brief period (i.e. 25ms).
Any suggestions on where we might look for equipment that suits our needs but doesn't cost as much?
