ER rotation anybody?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My favorite rotation by far! The preceptors at that site did have a reputation for being extremely tough on students, to the point of bringing some to tears, so most of my classmates were too scared to venture there, but I thrive on that stuff, so I took a chance and loved it!

The hospital had a major cardiac care unit, so I had to know all the guidelines inside out, culminating in a journal club which I did on ACS, and they loved it because it was totally relevant to their practice.

A typical day would be hanging out with my preceptor while he did order entry when we were waiting for interesting patient cases to come in. During downtime we would discuss disease states, treatment guidelines and give presentations to the IPPE students.

Interesting patient cases would be things like ACS. Those were pretty intense. I also spent a day in the cath lab and a day at the fire station with the paramedics to ride around in ambulances and stuff.

So overall, very challenging because you need to know about all sorts of things and a lot happens in a time critical manner, but also, very, very rewarding.

I completed a two month ED rotation last year. It was mostly medication reconcillation...

depends on the hospital. I was an ED intern for almost 3 years during school. It was a trauma center and had 1000 beds, and had a nice ED satellite pharmacy. It was AWESOME to work in! Loved traumas, codes, and the excitement.

Also did an ED rotation as a part of 4th year, but that hospital had no ED satellite pharmacy, the pharmacist just had a computer in the crammed ED, did mostly med-rec and follow up calls on urine cultures (STDs). Did NOT enjoy it. The preceptor did arrange for me to spend a day at a fire station with an EMT team. At the end of the day, we responded to a shooting, Went into the crime scene with bullet proof vest on because the cops were still bringing the suspect out. Then I helping an EMT keep one guy alive in a racing ambulance. That was rewarding, but it was about the only excitement for that month.

@ValeUC Mine is starting next week...May be we can both keep each other posted :luck:

@pezdispenser, EBT12, xiphoid2012...Thank you all for sharing your experiences 🙂 I am now super excited to start mine 🙂
