My favorite rotation by far! The preceptors at that site did have a reputation for being extremely tough on students, to the point of bringing some to tears, so most of my classmates were too scared to venture there, but I thrive on that stuff, so I took a chance and loved it!
The hospital had a major cardiac care unit, so I had to know all the guidelines inside out, culminating in a journal club which I did on ACS, and they loved it because it was totally relevant to their practice.
A typical day would be hanging out with my preceptor while he did order entry when we were waiting for interesting patient cases to come in. During downtime we would discuss disease states, treatment guidelines and give presentations to the IPPE students.
Interesting patient cases would be things like ACS. Those were pretty intense. I also spent a day in the cath lab and a day at the fire station with the paramedics to ride around in ambulances and stuff.
So overall, very challenging because you need to know about all sorts of things and a lot happens in a time critical manner, but also, very, very rewarding.
