I'm really interested in getting some experience in the ER and I think an ER scribe is the best place to get it, so I was just wondering how would I go about volunteering as an ER scribe? One of my friends told me he got a volunteer position because his brothers best friend is a doctor and helped him out but how would an "average joe" go about getting a position like that? I googled "volunteer ER scribes NY" but nothing came up. Should I just call the ER departments in various hospitals? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

ER scribe is a job so you have to apply to it like you're applying for a job. I don't think there is a such thing as a "volunteer" ER scribe position.

Just google ER scribe and you'll see a bunch of links.

It's a GREAT experience. You apply for it just like any other job. Go on the websites of hospitals near you. If a job opening is listed for it, apply for it. If it's not listed, they either don't have a scribe program or they don't have any open positions.

Scribing isn't the kind of position you can volunteer for. There is an education process involved and there is a steep learning curve.

Know that many hospitals still don't use scribes. The hospital I work at has three branches. The main branch does not yet use scribes - the scribe program is being tested out at the smaller two other branches first.

Look up medical scribe companies, CEP, EMSS, etc., that use scribes in New York. Being a scribe is great for a year or two, but then it gets tedious. Great thing for your app, good experience, and throws you into the medical world.

So inorder to become a scribe I would need at least a bachelors degree right? If thats the case then I would be taking two years off before medical school, minimum. I only wanted to take one year off?

No. Scribing most certainly does not require a college degree.

does anybody know any scribe companies in new york (specifically Long Island)..I checked out the ones listed above but no NY positions available?

I am interested in scribing but I wonder if I could even do that because my college and home are too far away if I were to stay in one place for a scribe job. I wouldn't be able to commute because it's too far away. Anyone have ideas? I don't think I'll have enough time to get an EMT certification. So I'm looking for something else.

You could look into CNA work. Plenty of nursing homes around.
