I'm a senior, going on super-senior, planning to finish my degree in two years. I don't really have a lot (read: don't have any) medicine experience, as for a very long time, I kind of figured I'd be heading to veterinary school.

I do have my EMT-Basic certification - got that last summer. My problem is what to do this summer. :/ I've been desperately poking around looking for a job, but I'm not really having any luck.

Any suggestions on what to do? Do I keep searching? Do I give up and focus on reviewing chemistry in preparation for o-chem in the fall? (I'm planning to do that anyway, really.)

But one thing I'd heard whispers about was the ethereal position of "ER Scribe" - problem is I can't really find any information about it, particularly in my area (Minneapolis, MN). Anybody near there know anything about it? Anyone not near there know anything?

Suggestions/ideas/links/whatever would be greatly appreciated - I'm just trying to get experience. I'm trying to use this summer to decide where exactly I want to go (Med school, vet school, or grad school... )

Thanks so much.

I'm an ER Scribe in Florida - I work through ScribeAmerica. You can check out their website to see if they are in your area. The Scribe program is very limited as far as location. It's definitely great experience as you will learn a lot of the paperwork side to what most ER physicians would normally have to fill out

I don't know about MN, but I had the same question about Ann Arbor, MI. Has anyone heard of scribes over there?

I did eventually find the company Abbott-NW works through for scribes, and am planning to apply there. Don't quite know about Hennepin.

I did look up ScribeAmerica, and they're only on the E/W coast, nowhere in MN - thanks for the idea though.

I'm an ER scribe in Louisiana. I got the job when I was volunteering at a local ER. Doctor told me I was wasting my time and encouraged me to apply. I've only been doing it for a short time but I think it's a pretty good experience. I'm becoming comfortable talking to patients, asking sensitive questions, knowing which pertinent questions to ask, being around MDs, PAs, NPs and RNs, and basically getting an extended first-hand look into how emergency medicine works in one particular ER. I'd honestly do it for free but we get paid about $7/hour here.

Nice! do you work for a certain company? I am fortunate to make $10/hour where I work in FL.
