Hi, I have a scholarship from a hospital where I need to work there after college. They said I wouldn't have to fulfill it since there really isn't much I could do, but I was wondering what opportunities I could look into in the ER. It is a small hospital (town of 8,000) but I am sure they still need techs or something. What is the training like for all of the jobs? EMT's? I suppose I could train in the spring semester if I decided to do something there. Thanks.

Not to pick but something for all pre-meds to realize. In the medical profession it is not called ER but rather it is called ED.

EMT is a neat way to get into the medical profession. I'm not sure about tech jobs. Depends on any experiance you may have and how desperate certain departments are at the hospital.

Good luck

I work in a Level One Trauma Center, in the ....ER...., and everyone here calls it the .....ER

I work as a tech in an ER (thats what we call it as well). Most of the other techs are either nursing students or EMTs, but at our hospital at least, they are flexible about qualifications... I simply got certified as a CNA. If thats a possibility at your hospital it takes a lot less time.

As opportunities for exposure go... I cant imagine any other low level position giving more. Its been great.

I wonder.... are the terms ED and ER a regional thing?
Any one want to do a poll here.

How about what state you are in and what term they use ER or ED?

I'm in Northern VA, all the docs I have been around use ED.

My husband's an emergency medicine doc, and he usually calls it the ER. Very rarely will he call it the ED, but once in a blue moon he does. He went to med school in N. Carolina, residency in Toledo, worked for a year in Seattle and now we live in Houston, so I'm not sure what part of the country you would consider him coming from.

I work in a Minnesota Level 1 Trauma Center and everyone in the Twin Cities area calls it the ED. I have also worked on several national multicenter studies and there seems to be general movement toward calling it the ED. I don't think you'll burn any bridges one way or the other though...🙂

*Stupid question alert!*

What does the D stand for in ED? For the record, I've never heard it referred to as ED...it's always been ER to me...😕
