Our school tells us if we are AOA eligible based on our class rank and overall performance. I received an email saying that I was a candidate for election to AOA, but ultimately I was not elected. Our elections are closed door and we don't know who is on the committee, so I'm not sure how members were ultimately chosen. I was wondering if would be worthwhile to put that I was at least a candidate for election based on being in the top 25% of my class under the awards/honors section in ERAS. My MSPE doesn't list class rank so I was thinking at least I could mention it this way? Thanks

Sounds like a really weird thing to do; would make you stand out in a negative way. Not to mention that it just serves to draw attention to the fact that you're not AOA.

My adviser recommended I put the AOA stuff- now I'm not so sure. What it be worthwhile to mention top 25% class rank in awards/honors (with nothing about the AOA stuff) since it isn't listed anywhere else in my application/mspe?

Does your MSPE stratify you in any way compared to your peers, i.e. quartiles? If so, the AOA eligible designation is repetitive. If not, do what you want. Not sure how it will be perceived by programs.

They don't include that in our MSPE letter. I think I'll just put "top 25% of class" under the awards/honors section and leave it at that. Thanks!

They wont care or will think your weird, since there is nothing that keeps track of "number of students in program who claimed to be top 25% of their class."

There is however a stat for average step i and ii in program and number of AOA.

Point is, its nothing they can brag about so why would or should they care at all?

I see 'AOA candidate' listed on apps every once in a while, and given school differences in elections etc, never really know how to take it other than "oh, must be smart". I think Youd be fine just doing that

It's interesting that things like AOA (or PBK from undergrad) can hold so much weight yet vary wildly from school to school on how one gets selected. Some do it automatically based on one criterion, some use selection committees, etc.

Yeah but you can already see their step score and grades

Right. But, I don't know who is an "aoa candidate" who missed the 10% cut off, or 25%, or missed the vote by committee or whatever. I see the app in total. AOA vs aoa candidate doesn't mean too much different to me as I shuffle through 1000 or so applications. I see it, note it, move on.

AOA nominee simply tells you that they were in the top 25% of their class. Their MSPE should communicate similar information.

Should be fine.

Since I have a small cohort in my home town that will be voting for me in the 2016 elections I listed presidential candidate under awards/honorary societies.

I want programs to understand that I was a close 4th party candidate that had some bad luck early on. Otherwise crooked Hillary would be choking on my dust instead of her pneumonia.
