I can't help but notice the insanity of PGY2 increasing by 600 positions but PGY1 increasing by 186 positions.... hmm.. :d

Hmm, it looks like the results aren't as different from past years as some have felt. Match rates for US seniors, DOs on a percentage basis isn't really dramatically changed.

However, # of DOs and US IMG are increasing quickly... so that translates into a greater absolute # of applicants unable to match. I think that's the root cause of such difficulty for scramblers this year. More and more applicants from non-US Seniors plugging up the holes that used to slip through the match unfilled. And those same trends are only going to continue to grow over the next 3-5 years.

If there's one take-away here for US seniors... more than ever, don't risk not matching.

That's because Neurology is using the NRMP match now instead of the San Fransisco match.

why is it so diff. to match for US physicians? 55% no match rate!!
Are they shooting for competitive specialties?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that number includes anyone in the US who has already matched/trained previously. This includes those who matched or scrambled prelim, are now trying to match into a full program. It presumably also includes those trying to switch residencies/specialties.

When it comes to US seniors vs. US physicians... if you failed step 2 or something like that and didnt manage to join a residency by the summer... then in the next year you would be labeled "US Physician" because you graduated. People who dont match in their last year usually have record problems and its not a surprise if they need to scramble in the match the year after.

I matched into my #2 choice for neurology but my #5 choice for preliminary. I think people really don't take the preliminary position as seriously as....you know what, i'll get back to this later. spider-man 2 is on Fx. It's that scene where he stops Dr. Octopus on the train. Surprisingly I find this a whole lot more interesting than hearing the phrase "Residency is competitive" repeated ceaselessly in all its shapes and forms.
